Elton John

Elton John

It’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Hello Blackpool Headlands – and not before time!

Last time Elton John performed in Blackpool was 30 years ago and the then chairman of Watford Football Club wished Blackpool FC well from his team’s loftier position in the top division.

There have been many changes since Sir Elton last graced a Blackpool stage – two nights at the Opera House in November 1982.

Pinball Wizard, Crocodile Rock, Daniel and even a Beatles medley were part of his electrifying set which left fans clamouring for more – even after three encores.

A spokesman for the venue’s then owners Trusthouse Forte said: “We want to attract as many star names as possible to the resort.”

The fact is Blackpool still does – and with the availability of the Headlands as a live music facility we will continue to do so.

Already lined up are McFly and Wanted. Optimists are still keeping their (sticky) fingers crossed for the Rolling Stones to return now their Blackpool ban is lifted, but in the meantime pop and rock’s greatest showman will certainly do quite nicely, thank you very much.

It’s unlikely his costumes will be quite as flamboyant as they were in 1982 but Elton John is a major coup.

Hopefully one of many to be announced in the not too distant future for a performing area which should finally put Blackpool back in with a chance of luring the calibre of act requiring the kind of audience figures only major big city arenas and open air festivals have been able to boast.

We’ve got the space, we’ve got the accommodation and now we are beginning to once again get the acts.

Bring them on.
