Plenty of brass to be found

Ignore the recession, there will be plenty of brass in town later this month for the 2012 North West Regional Brass Bands Championships.

On Sunday February 26, at the Winter Gardens, 80 brass bands from all parts of the north west will be taking take part in what is commonly known as the ‘Areas’.

The North West is one of eight regions taking part in the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, culminating in finals held at the Royal Albert Hall for the Championship Section and in Cheltenham for Sections 1 to 4.

Major bands taking part in the Championship Section include Fodens, Fairey’s, Wingates and Leyland and these together with eight other bands will be hoping to win a place in London later in the year.

The five sections will be run in three of the Winter Gardens halls – the Opera House, Empress Ballroom and Pavilion Theatre.

The event is managed by around 50 volunteers from across the region, controlled by a championship committee, and it all starts on Saturday morning with the three halls being set up, finishing at around 7.30pm on the Sunday.

There are also brass related trade stands exhibiting their wares in the East Horseshoe.

The Winter Gardens doors open at 8.30am on Sunday with the entry cost being £10 (adults) and £7 (concessions) with under 5s free.

The all day ticket allows access to all perfoming areas as many times as you like.
