Fylde Arts mid day recital season’s farewell to 2011

The last Fylde Arts mid day recital at Poulton Methodist Church before Christmas will be given on Friday by John Powell (baritone) and Russell Lomas (piano).

John Powell was born in London and educated in Somerset and Cambridge University.

He has spent much of his life in Manchester and his musical activities have centred around singing, teaching and conducting choirs. For some years he was head of choral music at Chetham’s School of Music, but now teaches privately, is a tutor with the National Youth Choir and is very active as a festival adjudicator.

A member of the Northern Singers since 1975, and a founder member of the Britten Singers, John has sung on radio, TV, disc and at the proms, Aldenburgh and Harrogate festivals and has toured abroad extensively. He also performs regularly in recitals and oratorio.

Russell Lomas studies with Gordon Green, Clifton Helliwell and Franz Reizenstein at the Royal Manchester College of Music from where he graduated with distinction in both performers and teachers diplomas, and was awarded the Ricordi Prize for Accompaniment.

Until his retirement in 2003 he was head of accompaniment at Chetham’s School of Music and was frequently to be seen on TV accompanying young performers in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competitions. Since then he has given many concerts in the UK and abroad and accompanies in many festivals.

Beginning at 1pm Friday’s recital includes songs by Schubert, Ravel, Gurney, Wolf and Vaughan Williams.

Admission is £7 (£5 for Fylde Arts members). Hot lunches available from 11.30am.
