Dancing in the air

A woman whose family trips to Blackpool Empress Ballroom inspired her to become a dancer returns to the resort for the first time next weekend to perform a gravity-defying aerial tango more than seven metres above the ground on the famous North Pier.

Professional dancer Wendy Hesketh, 37, from Liverpool, has pioneered a unique art known as bungee assisted dance with her partner Jamie Ogilvy, which she has performed around the world to rave reviews.

Her appearance in the free Blackpool dance festival out2dance on Saturday will be her first performance in the town that prompted her to pursue a career as a dancer.

The breathtaking show, called Fervorosa Vignettes, will see Wendy and her partner Stu Waters seemingly suspended in mid-air over the sea at the end of the North Pier in the aerial tango.

"I'm really excited to be returning to Blackpool," she said. "I used to love going there as a child with my family and stepping around the ballroom with my dad."

Wendy has trained with the London Contemporary School of Dance and renowned dance company De La Guarda, and performed her art form around the world, most notably for 130,000 people at the premiere of the Lord of the Rings in New Zealand.

"We've recently got back from Argentina where we learnt the essence of the tango moves, which we have made much more elaborate with our own form of bungee assisted dance," Wendy added.

"I perform attached to a discreet bungee which is attached to rigging and perform a series of slow, subtle moves while Jamie, our technical director, pulls on the rigging to make it appear as though I'm dancing through the air. It really is a beautiful spectacle, and will look even more so against the backdrop of the sea."

Wired Aerial will be appearing at
