Beatlemania on the Mersey

This Thursday is being officially rechristened as the first ever Beatles Day – 24 hours when the people of Liverpool will show their love for the Fab Four and raise money for the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal and Liverpool UNites.

The legendary appearance of The Beatles on the roof of the Apple building in Savile Row in January 1969 is being recreated by the organisers and Beatles tribute bands will appear in various locations throughout the city playing songs from the album Let it Be live.

Chris O’Neill from the Backbeat Beatles said: “ I’m going to be shaking my head like a Beatle all day by the looks of it! We’re really excited at the thought of being involved in the first Beatles Day. It will go down in history as the day everybody in Liverpool wore a mop-top wig instead of just us Beatles bands for a change.

“Come and support us at one of the events. Get involved and raise some money!”

The Beatles Mop-top wigs are being sold at 5 each – with all the profits going to charity.

A huge range of events are planned for the day.

from 7am to 9am The Backbeat Beatles will serenade workers on their way to work on the ferry from the Pier Head as well as kids on their way to school, all wearing their mop-tops of course.

At 10.30am the Band On The Run Beatles Fun Run takes place at the Echo Arena.

There will be goody bags and a free mop-top wig for all participants.

From 2pm onwards The Beatelles, an all girl Beatle band will perform on the roof of BBC Radio Merseyside, visible from the side of the Bluecoat Chambers.

The Shakers and the Beatle Maniacs will also be performing on roofs throughout the city including ’08 Place and the Arena.

Imagine is the name of Alder Hey's charity – which helps raise money to continue the pioneering work and research at the hospital, which cares for more than200,000 children and young people every year.

Liverpool Unites is an anti-gun campaign launched following the murder of Rhys Jones last August. Set up as a registered charity, the campaign is currently raising 100,000 for the Rhys Jones Memorial Fund.
