RESIDENTS and councillors have made a desperate plea for road improvements at a hazardous junction after a series of accidents during the last three months.
Homeowners living near the junction of St David's Road and St Leonard's Road, St Annes, claim it is only a matter of time until someone is seriously injured or killed on the stretch of road.

The latest accident happened at 7.30am on Friday when a white Mercedes van and a black car collided.

A bus and a white van were involved in an accident, which seriously damaged a garden wall, at the junction in March.

And last month three cars crashed at the same junction.

Both drivers in Friday's crash escaped unharmed but residents fear, after similar incidents at the junction, it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.

They are now calling for Lancashire County Council, who are in charge of the town's road system, to introduce safety measures in a bid to prevent further accidents.

County Coun Howard Henshaw said: "We need traffic lights or a roundabout. It has got to be one of the two.

"I have been insisting on this for a while but now I am a county councillor I will be able to push much harder and that is what I will be doing. If someone had been killed or seriously injured I believe that would have been done by now but the county council need to do it before that happens."

Resident Bob Dagnall added: "It's yet another accident.

"Are the county council waiting until someone is killed before they find the money to take action?"

And St David's Road resident Carol Lanyon said: "I was in bed and heard a large bang.

"I looked out of the window and saw the aftermath of the accident.

"Nobody has yet been badly injured and that's probably why they haven't spent the money to sort it out yet."

Ward councillor, Tony Ford, also slammed the LCC highways department.
He said: "Coun Howard Henshaw and I have been campaigning for improvements to the junction and made suggestions but we've not been consulted."

Traffic bosses at LCC have vowed to improve the road markings and signs at the junction in a bid to reduce accidents in the coming months.

They have been working with Fylde Council and the pol-ice to come up with the plan.

Jim Robson, LCC area north highways manager, said: "As with any accident, we will await full details from the police before we consider the circumstances.

"However, we have recently been looking at traffic safety issues relating to the junction of St Leonard's Road West and St David's Road North.

"We propose to implement road marking and signing measures to improve the visibility of the junction on St Leonard's Road West for
traffic approaching on either side. These measures are in this year's programme of works and should be undertaken shortly."

Another crash involving a bus,not only in this town, but nationwide, the amount of injury and loss of life is staggering,it's not the necessarily the road layouts that need adjustment.

as long as incompetant drivers are allowed to drive cars, there will always be accidents. you wouldnt believe how many drivers go straight across this junction without stopping.

Cllr Henshaw is right. It probably needs a roundabout - or better still traffic lights. But until one or two people are killed, the cost benefit analysis probably won't justify either of these solutions

The main difficulty seems to be that traffic coming upslope from St Leonard’s Road East don't 'see' the crossing road and go straight on. You might do something with a bigger warning sign - and that looks to be where LCC are heading - but maybe a better action would be to have a sign top made up (like the schools 20mph ones) that flash a STOP message in LEDs as each vehicle approaches.

We are programmed to detect movement in our peripheral vision and even drivers not paying full attention are likely to be alerted by a sign that flashes.

They have recently done some, in my opinion "over the top" road safety measures recently, most noticably School Lane, outside the School, where not only have they put in speed bumps, but a round-a-bout and a raised road, all in the space of 100 yards.

Taking into account the school there, i recently witnessed drivers pulling out of St Patricks road in front of people driving up St Leonards near the school, mainly due to parked cars detracting views, but would it not be worth introducing speed bump restrictions here?

No shortage of money for speed cameras or mobile speed traps, but then again these make money and a roundabout or trafic lights don't.

Tone are these cameras like a printing press then, just throwing money out? Could it just be they only make money because as Mrs Burgess stated there are a lot of incompetent drivers out there?
