Work begins on new club stands
FLEETWOOD Town are going up with their latest promotion – but the stands at their Highbury Avenue ground are coming down.
Less than 48 hours after 2,660 fans saw them gain the Unibond Championship the bulldozers were moving in to begin the next part of the club's development.
They are beginning by dismantling the spectator area at the Park End of the ground and will do similar work on the West side of the ground so that two replacement stands.
It is part of a £1m project which will also include a new supporters' bar and new floodlights to Football League standard.
Extraordinary
The project will be completed for the start of next season.
Club chairman Andy Pilley said: "It's been an extraordinary few days for Fleetwood Town.
"Seeing the stadium redevelopment start straight off the back of Saturday's promotion as UniBond Premier League champions is great news for all concerned with the club.
"The new facilities will certainly boost the new season in the Blue Square Conference North.
"Although the building work is evident for anyone walking or driving down Highbury Avenue, the fans will have an opportunity the see the work for themselves when we play Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday in our last game of the season."
On Saturday, premier division champions Fleetwood will play a traditional end-of-season game with first division north winners – this year Bradford Park Avenue – with the Peter Swales Memorial Trophy at stake.
n The club are showing off the Unibond Premier League trophy around the community this week.
Yesterday it was on display at the Asda and tomorrow it will in Mike Sanderson Electricals on Lord Street.
The club will also be taking the trophy into local schools to show it off in assemblies.
