Outcry as children's games are scotched

HOPPING mad parents have hit out at council health and safety rules which forced a traditional children's game off their street.
Mum Elaine Morley, of Manor Road, felt bags of rubbish had been left on the streets of Fleetwood for longer than the traditional kids' game.
She said: "It's crazy. How can they wipe away our game, and act like killjoys, when items of rubbish are sometimes left around for weeks?"
Council bosses claimed the game – which involves a grid of numbered squares drawn in the street – had forced other walkers to leave the pavement and walk in the road instead.
Council workmen moved in to remove the children's chalk markings and clean up the area.
Parents were further angered by the fact that a used syringe and other rubbish had been left dumped in a nearby alleyway – although council bosses insist they moved quickly to clear that area after being informed of the problem.
Local children have since restored the hopscotch game in a wider stretch of pavement nearby.
Request
Explaining why Wyre Council had scrubbed away a children's hopscotch grid for "safety" reasons, Ruth Hunter, Streetscene manager, said: "The chalk marks were
removed at the request of a member of the local Residents' Association, who had received a number of complaints.
"The hopscotch grid took up the width of a narrow strip of pavement very close to shops and there was an important safety issue with children playing on the grid, particularly for people walking on the pavement, who would have to step into the very busy road to avoid them."
