New head named at top primary school
THE new head of Fleetwood's five-star primary school has been named.
Taking over at Shakespeare Primary in September will be Susan Bartlett who is a Fleetwood woman and has had a previous spell at the school which won a perfect score in an Ofsted assessment in 2006.
She is the current head at Christ the King RC Primary in Blackpool but, until seven years ago, was working as deputy to the current head Margaret Lund who is retiring.
Mrs Bartlett said: "I worked at Shakespeare for 11 years.
"I was quite a new teacher and worked my way up. I know what the school is about and I am hoping to continue all the good work.
"Its like coming home: It's a dream job for me to come back to a school where I was happy as deputy head."
Mrs Bartlett, who has a grown-up daughter, was born in Fleetwood and attended Blakiston and Chaucer Primary Schools before going to Fleetwood Grammar School and then Bristol University. She also did teacher training in Bristol.
With a shortage of teaching jobs, her first work was with the gas board and the DHSS but she returned to Fleetwood from Bristol in 1987 and taught at Charles Saer and St Mary's schools before arriving at Shakespeare.
She said: "I love it in Fleetwood and I would not live anywhere else."
When Christ the King could not get a head seven years ago she was asked to go as associate head for a term but liked it so much she decided to stay.
"I was not looking for any other job but when the Shakespeare one came up I couldn't resist having a go."
She realises that it will be tough following Mrs Lund who is something of a legend of Fleetwood after doing a great job for 20 years.
Mrs Bartlett said: "What a challenge it is. Margaret is so well respected, so professional – everybody looks up to her.
She added: "I can't be Margaret, I can only be myself and hope that in time I will be good enough. Anyone who comes in can't step directly into her shoes. She has had 20 years at Shakespeare. I will just do the best I can.
"It's a wonderful job being a teacher and a head teacher. "It's the best job in the world to have the chance to make a difference in people's lives."
Mrs Lund said: "I'm delighted that she's coming back to Shakespeare because I know she cares passionately about education and about Fleetwood."
