Hitting high notes!
FLEETWOOD hit the high notes as it opened its refurbished Pocket Park – and
revived a song which had been forgotten for 120 years.
The £65,000 project has been the baby of the Fielden Trust – the organisation named after the 19th century philanthropist
Edward Fielden who helped the town in years gone by.
A highlight of the opening was the Fielden Hymn, last sung 120 years ago for the opening of the Fielden Public Library on Dock Street.
And members of the Fielden
family attended to hear the song in praise of their forebears.
"We are very proud," said John Fielden, great nephew of Edward Fielden, who was accompanied by his son Tom.
"It's fantastic something so wonderful is happening. It is wonderful to think the original donation is still alive and thriving.
"We knew nothing about the song, it's was a wonderful surprise."
Money from the sale of the old library went into the trust. It joined with Wyre Council to buy the land at a knockdown £40,000 from Michael Reaper, proprietor of Home Bakery.
The £25,000 refurbishment – which includes landscaping, planting of trees and erection of new railings to provide a green oasis – has been paid for by Doreen Lofthouse, chairman of Fisherman's Friend.
After the singing of the Fielden Hymn the park was opened jointly by Mayor of Wyre Coun Gordon McCann, Mrs Lofthouse, John Fielden and Mr Reaper.
Music was provided by the choir and band of Shakespeare Primary School and pupils from all the schools spoke of their work on murals at the park which were unveiled. They had been created with the help of local artist Norma Tate to illustrate various aspects of the town.
Chairman of the Fielden Trust, Danny O'Neill, explained how Mr Reaper had originally allowed use of his land on the corner of Victoria Street and North Albert Street.
Further help had come from local builder George Bancroft with local Rotarians driving the project.
