Historic opening to season in £1m stand
FLEETWOOD Town are banking on big backing from fans as they prepare for a £1m kick-off to the new season on
Saturday.
The cash has been spent on a revamped Highbury Stadium in time for the first match in the highest grade of soccer ever played by a Fleetwood team.
Town are now just two steps away from the Football League and, when they run out to face Hucknall in the Blue Square North League, manager Tony Greenwood will have five new signings in his squad.
Chairman Andy Pilley said it was an "exciting new era" and urged as many fans as possible to back the team.
When promotion fever was at its peak at the end of last season, 2,600 turned out to see Town clinch promotion.
He said: "Tony Greenwood's pre-season preparations have gone to plan.
"The quality of the squad is there to see. I feel Fleetwood Town will make a real impact on the Blue Square North."
Supporters will be able to sit in the new, 550-capacity West Stand although the new North Stand, a terrace to take 900 fans, won't be open until the following home game on August 23.
Mr Pilley said: "Fantastic progress has been made on the North Stand. It's an impressive structure with good views of the pitch. All the concrete steps are set to be in place by Saturday. When it does open it will be another groundbreaking and historic day."
He praised the backroom workers who had worked hard towards the big kick-off.
They included volunteers and groundsman Carl Horrax.
Mr Pilley said: "The pitch is looking the best it has since I've been at the club.
"I've heard from numerous supporters who have been coming to Highbury for a long time that the pitch is looking the best it has ever been.
"There has been a small army of volunteers at Highbury over the summer, painting to make existing parts of the ground look fresh.
"They do a sterling job and I'm very grateful for everything they do.
"It's a reflection of what the club means to them.
"Highbury is a focal point for the local community and we always encourage any help local people are able to give us."
