Good news for fire station bid
FLEETWOOD is to get its new fire station two years earlier than planned.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service had wanted to build a new Preston South station on a children's play area near Riversway but city bosses rejected the scheme, freeing up the cash for Fleetwood.
The town has now moved up the pecking order and initial hopes of a replacement facility within five years have been boosted to a predicted date of 2010 according to a brigade spokesman.
It is thought the station, set to cost more than £2m, would be paid for through a Public Finance Initiative.
This would mean private backers putting up the money for the build and maintenance with the brigade renting back the finished building.
The spokesman said: "The cost is the sort of figure that makes it impossible for the authority to pay out from its own money."
The current station on Radcliffe Road cost £49,000 when it was built in 1962 but is badly in need of replacement.
Wyre Borough Council's planning committee gave proposals the thumbs up last week, paving the way for the plans to come together over the next three years.
As well as the usual facilities such as a rest room, canteen and gymnasium, there would also be areas where outside organisations could hold meetings. This would be part of the brigade's commitment to strengthening links with the community.
The spokesman said: "This sort of thing has been done at Morecambe and Hyndburn and has proved very successful.
"The new fire stations look to maintain operational response efficiently, as we always do and we always look for improvements in technology and fire prevention work. It's excellent news for Fleetwood."
The meeting rooms would give the brigade greater opportunity to put across its fire safety message and allow officers to put a greater emphasis on accident prevention.
The spokesman added: "Fifty percent of the incidents we attend are road traffic accidents.
"Just as we have fire safety in the home we are looking at ways in which we can have a role in traffic safety.
"We are members of the Lancashire Road Safety Partnership and hopefully firefighters' experience of dealing with car crashes can be used for campaigning."
