THE jinxed Fleetwood to Knott End ferry has been dealt another blow.
Council bosses halted the service at the weekend as essential safety work was needed on the jetty at the Fleetwood side of the river.

It is the latest problem to beset the ferry – named the Wyre Rose – following a series of breakdowns soon after i
ts arrival on the river in 2006.

The prospect of a bumper Bank Holiday was wiped out when possible problems were spotted with one of the piles which supports the jetty.

And Wyre Council officers are unsure when the service will be back.

In the meantime a replacement bus service is in operation.

Principal engineer Carl Green, said: "The council was alerted to a potential problem with the jetty and took the immediate decision to close the ferry dock as a safety precaution.

"The problem is linked to a small length of supporting pile on the jetty and as a result a contractor is currently undertaking repair work at the site.

"It is our hope the required work will be completed as soon as possible and the ferry service will be operational again at the earliest opportunity."

Ian Drury of Wyre Marine, which operates the Wyre Rose ferry for the council, said: "We were getting ready for a good Bank Holiday and Wyre Council requested we stop the service."

The £350,000 vessel was tied-up for most of 2006 with mechanical problems and delays in crew training.

But it bounced back last year. It had an excellent summer season with around 60,000 people using the service.

It proved so popular an hourly winter service was launched. The ferry cuts the 40-minute round-trip bus journey to just a few minutes.

What a JOKE,,! Why oh Why could they not of spent the Staggering £350,000 on a floating road or a bridge, behind where the only large sea vessel that docks, remember the bailey bridges, a floating pontoon errected and moved within less time than it takes to drive an EMPTY bus to knott end, and definatly GREENER, or even an ex army amphibious vehicle from the beach and up the jetty, oh sorry wyre council thats to simple and obvious, carry on wasting all our taxes on an antiquated idea ?

the 60,000 people who have used the service dont want to comment, THATS BECAUSE THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT ARE SO CALLED USING IT ARE PENSIONERS OR THOSE WHO HAVE A PASS TO USE IT FREELY AS A TRIP TO THE BACK AND BEYOND KNOTT END, FOR WHAT ? THERES NOTHING THERE, ONLY AN OVER PRICED CAFE OF SORT , AND THE SAME VIEW FROM FLEETWOOD, WHY GO,? WHY O WHY O WHY O WHY?

I notice that both these comments come from someone who lives in Blackpool and not Fleetwood or Knott End. (Yes, the ferry does bring people who live in Knott End to Fleetwood!)

To Duncan Ford, if you do not know why people wish to travel from Fleetwood to the beautiful Over Wyre area, then I cannot really explain it to you.

By the way, pensioners are people too.

This link is vital and if it's only used by pensioners then it's even more vital. I know the cost of living for my parents ( pensioners ) has shot up and anything which reduces their need to drive / increases their standard of living has to be welcome by all. I too though am totally confused why a ferry is seen as the right answer for this link. There are so many alternatives that must be possible it just does not make sense to try to run a ferry in this stupid muddy estuary.

Surely some kind of foot bridge that allows ferries to pass, an amphibious vehicle or cable ferry or even a cable car would be much cheaper.

In fact, I actually believe a coin ( self service ) cable car system would be the answer. It would be cheap to install, negligible costs to run ( 24 hours a day ) and could easily span over the shipping lane. It would also act as a great tourist attraction for the whole area.
