MEET Kelly the wonder dog.
It's a wonder she's still alive after two amazing escapes from a watery end.
The Staffordshire bull terrier from Fleetwood was rescued from a sandbank by Fleetwood RNLI on Sunday – almost exactly three years after she was believed lost at sea.
Both times she came to grief by chasing seagulls, and both times owners Richard and Jean Wetherill, of Lark Court, thought she was gone forever.
Her latest drama began at 10.30am when she raced out of sight on the beach while being walked by Mr and Mrs Wetherill, who are pensioners and have two other dogs.
Family and friends searched all day, unaware that she had gone as far as two miles out.
Mr and Mrs Wetherill's daughter Sarah Walker said: "We looked for her all day: we never stopped.
"We were heartbroken.
"She's not a well dog to begin with. She has a bad heart and some damage to her spine and to go missing for so long all sorts of things go through your mind.
"To get her back was wonderful. The whole family is attached to her."
Kelly, 11 (a mature 77-years-old in doggie years), got her lucky break when Fleetwood lifeboat went to the assistance of a yacht and just happened to spot her near to an old wreck called the Stella Marie. They gave her a lift and without help she would certainly have been overwhelmed.
Lifeboat cox Paul Ashworth said: "The poor dog could hardly walk and we thought someone had taken it out and left it."
The happy ending came after the RSPCA found kennels for her and then police came to them with a report of a missing dog.
Kelly was back home by 6pm
Her other escape came in July 2005 when she raced out into the sea.
She was washed away by strong currents and Mr Wetherill patrolled the beach from dawn to dusk until, three days later he heard her familiar bark.
He was told by passengers by that she had been seen coming out of the tide the previous day.
