Former traffic warden Brenda Dwyer's career change is just the ticket!
Brenda is making a name for herself in the world of cakes - with creative designs for every event from Asian weddings to traditional English Christmas!
Even Prince Charles may be sampling one of her fancies – a cake and iced by Brenda will be part of hamper destined for Highgrove.
She can turn her hand to any kind of novelty cake. When a local Imelda Marcos wanted a cake complete with designer shoes, Brenda stepped up to the plate with ultra-feminine Gina stilettos, crafted in chocolate.
Brenda has found her niche in the world of cakes and sugarcraft after a varied career, including a stint as a traffic warden.
"After 18 years at Guardian Insurance, Lytham, where I worked up to team leader I moved to the police," said Brenda.
She was a line manager in Criminal Justice Support in magistrates and crown courts, but also had 18 months as a traffic warden, based at Bispham Police Station.
"I did all the normal duties plus police surveillance, school talks on traffic issues and police forums.
"While I was a traffic warden, I was used as "bait" with a female police officer to try to trap a flasher in Bispham. We didn't catch him!"
When she was off duty, her hobby was fast becoming a passion.
"I first got interest when I started making birthday cakes for my son Marc – my first novelty cake was a Thomas the Tank Engine when he was four.
"I started doing cake decorating classesin 1995 and once qualified in City&Guilds Cake Decoration and Design. I started off making cakes just for friends, family and work colleagues.
"My reputation grew and started my own business in April 2004. The following October the police allowed me to take a career break so I could do it full-time."
Working from the kitchen of her home at Ladybower Lane, Poulton, Brenda soon found herself stuck for space and converted the garage into a studio and now has her own shop and studio Enticing Cakes, Victoria Road West, Cleveleys.
She also studied sugar modelling, figure modelling and chocolate work in Manchester and took a teacher training course.
She now teaches sugarcraft adult dedication classes at Hodgson High School, Poulton, twice a week and has a class at her shop on Mondays.
Her technical skill is matched by her creativity. She can even craft caricatures of top table guests for a fun wedding cake!
Brenda, who is married to Peter and mum to Marc, 19, and Tasmin, 15, is willing to take on any challenge or tall order, including a three tier cake, five feet tall, for a civil partnership or a Belgian chocolate castle, big enough to feed 200 people!
"I have just finished an order from two hamper companies, one for 50 and another 100 Christmas.
"There's also a cake for Prince Charles – The Pennine Lancashire Food Festival has managed to secure a Royal Seal of Approval for the festival and for local food from the prince and he will be endorsing the festival.
"Made in Lancashire producer members will be providing produce for a hamper to be given to him, hopefully amid much publicity!" said Brenda.
Now the Christmas rush is on, Brenda is juggling her time between birthday, and occasion cakes and Christmas fare.
"Traditional Christmas cakes are still very popular, but so are novelty fruit cakes and chocolate cakes."
