A new Blackpool arts project has its first major showcase next month when Julian Kerridge and founder of the Blackpool Fringe Project Danielle Stickley team up to shoot a short film – Spring Tide Boots – in the resort.
The BFP has been established by Blackpool and The Fylde College performing arts graduate Danielle to promote the arts in Blackpool and stage events around the area.
Her dream is to establish an annual Blackpool Fringe Festival – “a bit like Edinburgh but on a wider scale – involving all aspects of the arts” – she says and if funding is in place in time there’s the chance of a three event pilot project this summer.
The pilot would involve a fringe theatre piece, a comedy event and an art and live music event – all to be held at the Raikes Hall in Blackpool.
The BFP is currently based at the Media Factory in Preston but Danielle has also established a drama group in the resort – the Blackpool Fringe Group – and teaches theatre to teenagers and adults.
She was at the Blackpool college at the same time as now established actors John Simm and Dean Kelly before heading to drama college in London for three years followed by two years in New York and several more years in MIlan and elsewhere in Europe before heading back to Blackpool to settle down.
Having started the BFP she was then approached by Julian Kerridge who had a film script based in Blackpool.
“He asked if I could help and it was exactly the sort of thing I was already looking to get the project involved with,” said Danielle.
London Film School graduate Julian, who is probably better known as Lisa Riley’s boyfriend Sean in the ITV series Fat Friends is relishing the opportunity to get on the other side of the camera.
“Acting is great but it’s only a small part of the process,” he said. “What I love about directing is you get to oversee the entire journey, from first draft to final cut. It’s very exiting to watch an idea come to life.”
The film tells the story of Daryl, a 19-year-old local lad struggling to cope with a dead end job and a destructive relationship with his alcoholic mother.
Now Danielle and Julian are looking for two young actors to play the leading roles in the 15 minute film and will be holding auditions in the coming weeks.
The roles being cast are; Daryl – 19, (white caucasian – intense, quiet, rough diamond) and Juliet – 16, (black, mixed race or Asian – feisty, intelligent and funny).
Anyone interested should send a photo with either a CV, or a brief description of their acting experience to springtideboots@hotmail.com
