After a success story spanning 30 years, the popular Grundy's Mid Day Recitals at the Queen Street art gallery come to a close tomorrow with an extra final one to mark the end an era.
Changes to the gallery’s commitments mean moving the resident grand piano from the Grundy and a question mark still hangs over whether future recitals will be moved to the less ambiant surrounds of the first floor Lecture Hall, divided between diff
erent venues or dropped altogether.

Tomorrow’s programme will consist of a miscellany of popular music performed by some of the artists who have participated in past recitals through the years.

Three well known singers contribute arias, songs and duets: Irene Kitt sings excerpts from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Tina Bywater will offer Bizet’s Habanera from the opera Carmen and together they will sing duets by Mendelssohn, while Marilyn Lloyd will perform the famous Willow Song from Verdi’s Otello.

Popular clarinettist Harry Colledge will render the beautiful slow movement from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and provide an obbligato to a ballade.

The frequent and welcome visitor to the recitals, pianist John Shirley, returns to play two groups of solos by Schubert, Chopin and Liszt.

As usual the Grundy Recital Series creator and organiser Marjorie Pennington will accompany the artists and offer duets with John.

The recital begins at 12.45pm, admission is free and coffee is available during the interval.
