THE Fylde coast's new Army battalion has a key role to play in securing a safe future for the people of war-ravaged Afghanistan. Troops from the Second Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment (2 Yorks) moved into Weeton in July, but next week the 500 soldiers will make their way to Helmand Province, where they will provide vital training and support to the fledgling Afghan army.
Their job is seen as a key part of long-term plans to bring stability and peace to a country devastated by decades of fighting.
And in Helmand province the troops will have a tough task on their hands.
The southern Afghan region has been the setting for a number of clashes between British troops and Taliban insurgents and eight British troops have been killed in action in the province since the start of August.
Commanding officer, Lt Col Simon Downey, (left) believes his men are ready for the task ahead.
He said: "We have been through very comprehensive training ahead of the deployment.
"We will be trained and ready to take forward what is a key part of the international community's plan to bring sustainable peace and security to Afghanistan.
"It is a challenging area."But we will enjoy our role in Southern Afghanistan and the families at home will get the support to make sure they enjoy the time as well."
The task the soldiers will serve is seen as a key to putting Afghanistan on a firm footing for the future.
Lt Col Downey explained: "We will act as a mentor to the Afghan national army in Helmand.
"That will involve our officers and men serving and living alongside our colleagues from the Afghan army. We will make sure they are trained to the best possible standards.
"Hopefully it will lead to the long-term delivery of a strong force which can bring security and stability to the country."
Men from the battalion will be in Afghanistan for between six and nine months, and the troops will be based on the Fylde coast for the next three years.
Talking about the troops' new home, Lt Col Downey said: "The battalion couldn't wait to get to Weeton.
"I know there was a lot of talk about us being a Yorkshire regiment coming over here to Lancashire. "As a Yorkshire regiment we're very pleased indeed to be hosted over here.
"I know this is a county which gives superb support to its military.
"It has been a very hectic move, but the battalion is now recharged.
"Families have settled and they have had the advantage of getting to know the local area."
Troops from 2 Yorks were already thinking of making the most of their move north.
The battalion was formerly based in Chepstow on the English Welsh border, and squaddies are glad to be in Lancashire.
Private Alan Atkinson, 26, from Scarborough, said: "It is a lot closer to home. That is brilliant. I'm closer to my family up here and that is really important."
Private Gary McCabe, 20, from Billingham on Teeside, said: "I know about the night life in Blackpool, the Pleasure Beach and the Tower.
"It is great to be near that. There's a lot more to do than there was down in Chepstow."
The soldiers are apprehensive about the task ahead.
Private Alan Atkinson said: "The atmosphere is tense. There is a lot of work to do and everyone is just concentrating on getting ready to go."
Private McCabe said: "I'm a bit scared. I think everybody will be."
Troops begin shipping out to Afghanistan on Wednesday.
