Traditional tram call There seems to be quite a lot of fuss surrounding the new supertrams which are being proposed for our resort. One would think that the powers-that-be have so much money to play with, it is burning a hole in their pockets.
I state this because I just saw the Western Train tram pass by my front window, and I was thinking, why on earth doesn't
Blackpool Transport have Bombardier build nostalgic style trams instead?
Nostalgic style trams may seem hokey, but that is what Blackpool is all about.
It is a tourist destination. Visitors come here to have some fun, and a laugh. Many people come here to enjoy a leisurely ride on our world famous trams.
Do we really need multi-million pound fast moving trams?
After all, anyone wishing to go somewhere in a hurry will drive or catch an earlier bus or tram, or hop-a-taxi, maybe even walk, run, ride a bike – the possibilities are endless. Whose transportation system is it anyway?
Doesn't it belong to the people of
Blackpool?

Why not extend existing buildings?
It seems the developers are determined to build on
Vicarage Road, Poulton,
regardless of the suitability or not of any alterative site.
The proposed road traffic scheme will create havoc around Poulton centre at peak times, with jams far worse than at present, and with the many hundreds of extra pedestrian and car journeys for patients, medical staff and visitors to the proposed PCT Training Centre on a daily basis.
It will be an accident waiting to happen.
It will cost 200,000 to 300,000 to provide St Chad's Tennis Club with playing
facilities at Moorland Road.
When I raised this at the
public meeting, the developer said "it is not out of pPublic money."
Will it be funded from future rental agreements?
If not who will pay?
At the recent public meeting I believe only one Wyre
councillor attended, Peter
Gibson, and although he may or may not agree with many of the objections, at least he did listen to the views of the community.
Perhaps our other local
councillors were not interested, but they are supposed to
represent us all.
We have had more than 35 years first class treatment at Queensway Surgery.
While we appreciate
improvements can be made to anything, it would seem a
matter of common sense to consider the feasibility of building two extra floors with lifts onto the existing building.

Bus vital
I am a 91-year-old wheelchair-bound traveller on the RideAbility buses.
I have used this service since it started some 17 years ago, and always looked
forward to the outings made possible for people like me and the elderly, who, with the help of the very well trained
drivers can enjoy a few hours away from 4 walls.
It would be very sad, indeed to not have the pleasure of looking forward to our outings with this service.

Dancing into Marine Hall
Regular dancers are
disenchanted with the closure of Blackpool Tower Ballroom for traditional Saturday night
dancing.
Last Saturday evening we packed the Marine Hall at
Fleetwood for non stop dancing that ran from 7.30 to 11.00pm.
Organised by one of the dancers, David Hughes, this event was a sellout a few weeks ago .The music was provided by Phil Kellsall, who has now played the Tower Wurlitzer Organ for 34 years for the delight of locals and visitors.
He was joined by Chris
Hopkins another favourite who plays the Wersi Organ and has 13 years service at The Tower.
Both these musicians brought along their own organs and everyone was enthralled by the magnificent music .
The Marine Hall cannot match the opulence of the Tower
ballroom but we wanted a
Saturday night dance and there we got it .
What the summer visitors will do is a puzzle .
Many thanks to David, Chris and Phil .
Roll on the Autumn replay.

Prom has been worse in past
Reading Blackpool's history, and how the seafront used to look was a lot worse than more recent decades, but I don't disagree with Joseph Buck's comments (The Gazette June 22) when stating how run down some buildings are today – using as an example the dilapidated bowling alley.
Even though such venues do need sprucing up they're not as unattractive as the one time Golden Mile stalls with their cheap signs and advertisements along with the What the Butler Saw and Bearded Lady side shows as they dominated the east side of the Promenade.
However Mr Buck is wrong when he states "people can visit a River Island or Debenhams in their own town or city.".
Sorry they can't because my native town alone has none of them and the nearest
Debenham's is several miles away.
Durham City, the very place one would expect to see a
Debenham's doesn't have one
either, nor does it possess a
department store.
Two women visitors who had just alighted from their coach
on a day trip asked me directions to the Tower saying they had
arrived for a shopping spree and couldn't wait to sample our shops.
Blackpool continues to move forward, all the refurbishment proves it, but be patient.

Suggestion of street name
A quote from the Oxford
Dictionary – "Folly: foolishness. foolish act, ornamental building serving, no practical use."
After hearing all the comments of the Birley Street construction, may I suggest renaming the area, Callow's Folly.
