Letters - June 17
I know not as many people are taking on pets in the current financial climate, but if you are thinking of getting one, please make our local sanctuaries your first port of call.
Cat Rescue, Easterleigh, Cats Paws, the RSPCA Longview Home and Fylde Branch are all bursting at the seams with animals ranging in age from newborn to golden oldies.
All rescued pets soon settle into a new loving home and become part of the family, bringing with them their own individual personality, love and devotion.
By taking a pet from a sanctuary you are not only helping one animal, but two, as adopting one means you are making room for another
unfortunate creature to come into the safety of the
sanctuary and have the chance of finding a new home.
Please think very carefully before taking on any pet, do not act on a whim and start something that will only end in misery for the pet and a problem for our already
over-burdened sanctuaries.

Move counters into council site
Good news indeed that the
former Harvey's store on
Abingdon Street is to be
converted into council offices.
I understand traders in the area – particularly the market - have suffered since the crazy
decision to move the post office counter service from its bus route site to one that has
restricted accessibility.
As the council will be sub
leasing space in its new building, perhaps the post office could move back there.

Keys honesty
I visited Blackpool on Wednesday June 3 and parked in the car park behind the Tower.
On returning to my car I could not find my car keys and after a frantic search through all pockets I noticed a note on my rear
windscreen informing me that my keys had been found and handed in to the police station.
Unfortunately the police could not reveal the identity of the
person who handed in my keys due to the Data Protection Act.
This letter will
hopefully be read by the person concerned. It comes with my
sincere thanks for the honesty which saved me from the most embarrassing situation.
It is so refreshing in this day and age to be able to write a letter showing that honest and responsible people are still out there.

Great news if it ever happens.
Amazing, who would have thought that transporting vast amounts of freight by rail from a port was a good idea

The sum of 500 million to re-open railway lines is nothing
compared to what money we spend on widening our
motorways.
In Scotland and Wales where they have opened old railway lines they have been really successful so there is a very strong case for reopening them.

The time scales from this vary from five to -10 years with
another estimate of two decades.
Talk about can't do Britain.
Brunel built the London to Bristol railway with picks and shovels in 4 years.
To re-connect Fleetwood to the rail network we're talking about removing the weeds from an
existing railway line, upgrading points and building a cheap,
pre-fabricated station near the old fish dock.
And this apparently could take up to 20 years.
The lack of dynamism in this country is why we are declining.
People will respond by saying it takes so long because we need to consider planning laws and all the other bureaucratic excuses. So let's get rid of these laws.
Let's remove this self-inflicted inertia so we can get this
country moving again.

Beeching made a sound
economic decision to close these branch lines 45 years ago – in hindsight it has proven wrong but at the time these lines were little used – one branch line in West
Yorkshire saw only 945 tickets sold in the whole year.
We should be encouraging and moving forward with the reopening of old branch lines to take the pressure off the roads but surely if only 14
nationwide are going to be considered there must be more worthy candidates
within Lancashire – by that I mean areas that would make more use of the service.
