We're all in smell's firing line
I'm afraid Des Sainsbury (The Gazette, May 17) has got hold of the wrong end of the stick.
The money which Coun Mark Hamer and myself are endeavouring to get from United Utilities has nothing whatsoever to do with individuals seeking legal advice regarding the possibility of taking proceedings.
They are completely separate matters.
When I was first elected two years ago, a big priority was the foul smell from which we had been suffering for over 10 years. Nothing whatever had been done.
I went to Liverpool and saw expert solicitors. I campaigned and pressurised Wyre Borough, so much so that I got my way.
In October 2006 Entec Ltd, the top consultants in the country were appointed to get to the bottom of the problem. It took a year. In November 2007 they published their final report. United Utilities are, and have been for 11 years, completely to blame.
That report is crucial.
Without it, nobody could do anything, including Des Sainsbury's solicitors.
In the area of Fleetwood where I live, we have suffered worst of all from the foul stench. We are all in the 'firing line'.
Mark and I have met the top management from UU. We have reminded them of their
social responsibilities and asked for a seven figure sum to be spent on a project in Fleetwood for the benefit of everyone.
A public meeting will be held to decide on that project. First we have to get the money! They promised to come back by July 14.

There is risk in everything we do
Re: Quickest fix isn't always the best one (The Gazette, May 14), I wonder if letter writer Sue Hainey has ever had her hair cut at the hairdressers, been for a manicure/pedicure, bought new clothes or enrolled at a slimming club to lose a few pounds?
The reasons we do these things are the same that Anita Chase-Jones had her corrective surgery, apart from the difference in cost of course.
We get our haircut to look nice, which in turn makes us feel better, we might go for a manicure so our hands look nice, we buy new clothes because we want to look nice. If we're going to a party we might get our hair done that day, we may have bought a new outfit or shoes/handbag for the party, because we want to feel good.
Don't we all feel more confident if we look nice? If we feel good on the inside, even if we may not look any different to anyone else, it shows in our confidence. Yes there is the risk, there is risks in everything we do, childbirth is one of the riskiest things women go through, but it doesn't stop us.
By the sound of it Mrs Chase-Jones did a lot of research and it wasn't a matter of wanting it one day and having it done the next day – and thankfully it has been successful for her. I only wish I could afford to get it done, for my own self confidence.

Fare's fair?
AT 9am on Saturday May 17 we took a taxi from our home at Larkholme to Blackpool North Station.
The fare was 11.50.
At 6.30 pm on Saturday we took a cab from the station rank and returned home.
This time fare was a staggering 17.50, which is almost 50 per cent MORE than the morning charge.
Why this difference?
Was this a rip off?

Marks rejects animal cruelty
Congratulations to Marks & Spencer who not only sell an extensive 'completely cruelty free' range of toiletries and cosmetics, but have now added household products from washing up liquid right through to laundry detergent and air fresheners to their range.
All these products carry the BUAVs (British Union for the abolition of Vivisection) leaping bunny logo, making them instantly recognisable as cruelty-free and guarantees that a retailer does not conduct or commission animal testing for its final product or any product ingredient.
M&S has demonstrated its commitment to driving animal testing out of the cosmetics and house hold products industry and promoting the true meaning of being animal testing free.

The true cost of honesty
My daughter left an item of property on the bus and when I contacted Blackpool Transport to see if it had been handed in, I was pleased to hear it had but shocked to learn I had to pay a 1 to get it back.
Is this just me that is horrified by this? I paid 2.80 in bus fares yesterday and will have to pay a further 2.80 to attend Rigby Road to collect it – and then pay a 1.
The police do not charge 1 to get lost property back, why should Blackpool Transport? Are they going to refuse to give me my property back if I don't pay a 1?

Cherie would be a great musical
After inflicting her odious, titillating and juvenile tosh on the public, it can only be a matter of time before Cherie Blair follows her memoirs with the musical: Cherie, The Musical.
The hit tune will be: I'd do anything for money.
