Letters - July 2
I refer to the letter from Brian and Norma Jackson (The Gazette June 26) concerning the proposed health centre in Poulton.
Firstly, may I say the public meeting they attended was promoted by the
anti-Vicarage Road site lobby.
The Jacksons ask, why not extend existing buildings?
They forgot that the proposed
Primary Care Centre will replace not only Queensway Surgery but also the Clinic and the Lockwood Avenue Surgery.
Poulton has a severe traffic problem and will still have a severe problem in the future irrespective of where the health centre is sited.
However, the Jacksons assert the proposed road scheme for the Vicarage Road centre will create havoc around Poulton Centre at peak times.
If they had studied the offsite works proposed at part six of the traffic
assessment, they would have seen the proposals streamline incoming traffic.
While there will be an increase in the traffic in Vicarage Road, such
traffic will be able to use the gaps in the traffic going up Chapel Street, caused by the proposed synchronised traffic lights, to get safely into Ball Street or Breck Road .
I would advocate these proposals be carried out, irrespective of where the health centre is to be built.
Obviously, no plan is perfect, but if a PCC is to be built in the near future, then the Vicarage Road site plans should be supported.

Buildings need to reflect pristine Prom
Recently I finally got to see the sea side of the Promenade, I was most impressed, as I was with the new features on
Birley Street.
Now that we have one side of the Prom looking more like Nice or Cannes, do you think it will be
possible to transform the other side of the road?
In all the years I have had the pleasure of
living here, and they have been very many years, I have never before been so shocked at the state of, what should be, the most appealing area of the town.
People now seem to think that Blackpool has never had good shops, cafes and restaurants, but not too many years ago, the Prom, from the Clifton Hotel south, had a
beautiful shopping
arcade where you could buy perfume and make-up not available in the rest of the North West, and an
exclusive (and expensive) ladies gown shop.
In fact from Talbot Square to the Palatine Hotel was a terrific and uplifting walk.
Is there a chance that the sorrowful state of what should be our best asset, so many empty and run down properties could be restored to an area with small
independent shops and restaurants, making both sides of our Prom make us feel we really are in the South of France?

Collar and tag as well as chip
Whilst it is important to have your cat micro-chipped, it is equally as
important to fit it with a collar and tag depicting your address and
telephone number.
The reason being, that a lost cat can more easily be identified and re-united with its owner in a short space of time and without a trip to a vet to check for a micro-chip.
Cat Rescue was recently involved with a Blackpool cat that turned up in Oldham. The finders had the cat for two weeks, advertising it in their local paper to no avail.
Fortunately, they then took it along to a vet who found it to be micro-chipped.
If it had not been for the caring finders, things could have turned out differently.
So, by all means have your cat micro-chipped, but please don't
forget a collar and tag as well.

Flag day funds go towards research
The Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Branch of the Leukaemia Research Fund held a Flag Day in Garstang on Saturday 20 June 2009 at which we collected 266.05.
We incurred no expenses on the day and so all the money will go
towards research into leukaemia and allied blood disorders.
May I, thank people for their
generosity and cheerfulness. Never a Flag Day goes by, but someone tells us of a friend or relative who has had leukaemia – it is always such a privilege to listen to people's stories.

Parking issue at black spot
Regarding the recent spate of
accidents at the junction of St David's Road North and St Leonard's Road in St Annes, I worked as a
police sergeant in the town for nine years in the eighties.
The number of accidents at the junction was always high even though there was less traffic than now. The main reason then as now was the illegal parking of vehicles close to the junction.
This severely restricts the vision of drivers entering St David's Road from St Leonard's, forcing them into the junction without a clear view.
Unless action is taken to prevent the parking of vehicles at the junction no amount of road markings and signing will prevent further
accidents.

Veteran's dinner a massive success
May I say a very big thank you to the Buccaneer Restaurant in Coral Island for the wonderful free meal they provided again this year for armed services personnel, veterans and families.
Once again we received a welcoming drink, followed by a delicious, piping hot, carvery meal and a choice of desserts and then tea or coffee with mints.
This year the restaurant was better supported than previously and every person who received a meal left happy, full and full of praise for the kindness shown to us and the excellent food. We were treated like royalty and nothing was too much trouble for Mark, the manager, and his wonderful staff.
While here I learned that next weekend they are also playing host to the wives and families of troops serving in Afghanistan. These
people are unsung heroes who quietly go about doing their bit to raise morale amongst former and serving forces personnel.
Thanks once again to Mark and the team at the Buccaneer from each and every one of us.
