Letters - July 1
As a trader on Birley Street whose business has been dramatically effected by the construction of the arches, I now find myself in the unusual position of defending them.
K.W. Adams (The Gazette, June 26)
describes them as a folly serving no purpose, which is simply not true.
The increasingly impressive looking
arches carry lights and speakers that will make up what should prove to be an equally impressive light and sound show.
While I appreciate the arches may not be to everybody's taste I have witnessed on a daily basis people dismissing them outright with no knowledge of what they are or how they will look once completed.
I can only applaud the current council on their attempts, albeit long overdue, to
regenerate Blackpool with projects like this and St John's Precinct.
One criticism I have is that maybe I would not need to write this letter if the council was more informative about projects such as Birley Street.
As for K.W. Adams and others who have dismissed the arches, please show some imagination as did those who built the Tower all those years ago, now that was a folly.
Please could I take this opportunity to thank those customers who have stayed loyal to us during this difficult time and to those who understandably haven't, we look
forward to seeing you once the project is
completed.

I was some what dismayed by the letter from K.W. Adams. Firstly I would like to say that if you were to talk to the relevant people who work on Birley Street, that you might find out a bit more about the Brilliance Project, which will be opening soon.
I have owned Mochaccinos Coffee Bar Bistro for four years.
The other business owners I have spoken to regarding the lights and sound show have said it is a good investment for the local
people and tourists.
I have had to put up with the building work for 18 months now and believe that when the scheme is finished, it will enhance the area.
As to practical use, it will be able to
produce a wide range of different shows and themes for any occasion from Christmas to Remembrance Sunday, as well as a variety of music throughout the day.

Council should support owners, not be heavy handed
I was recently at the Art Deco Cafe in Stanley Park enjoying a quiet coffee in the sun, when I was totally disgusted at the
attitude and high handed
behaviour of two council
officials.
They appeared and demanded the tables and chairs outside the cafe were removed, even though they were being used.
The lady representing the cafe was totally shocked at the
request when the tables were
occupied and tried to reason with the council representatives.
I have been a customer at this cafe over the years and can
remember my parents bringing me there when Alf Colletta was the owner.
The atmosphere then was terrific and the present occupiers have brought back that
atmosphere.
The present occupiers of the cafe took on a tremendous amount of work in restoring the derelict cafe that they took over some few years ago.
They have made a fantastic job of this restoration and I have heard them asking long time customers for holiday snaps of the interior as they are
determined to bring back the old values. The council should be proud of what these people have done to this cafe and Stanley Park.

This is simply unbelievable and totally unacceptable.
I imagine Jet2 are pretty upset about this.
I wonder who had to pay to get the passengers home?

This is not a very good
advertisement for what is
supposed to be a huge North West brand, is it?
Who do you blame – the
controllers for apparently being ill or the airport's
management for not having sufficient resources to meet demand?

How amateurish! I have been on here giving positive comments about the airport in the past, but this is indefensible.
Not to have an air traffic
control officer on standby for such an occurrence shows
complete ineptitude.
With the cost of diverting, extra aircraft handling fees,
emergency transport costs, not to mention the inconvenience to the passengers, diversions are only acceptable in the event of bad weather or aircraft having
technical problems.

I and several of my friends were on this flight from
Torremolinos.
Jet2 apologised (it was not their fault) but issued a letter for all passengers, and I must say almost everyone accepted these things happen, but we all admitted that Blackpool International was a joke.
The coaches were laid on and we got back to blackpool at 1am.
So the contingency plan if two staff are sick at the tower is to divert planes to
Manchester? I think Blackpool Airport has to rethink
its policy on this. You
wouldn't find this happening
elsewhere.
