My shock at your shops
Having moved from Blackpool to Scotland, I recently visited family and took my young granddaughter into town for a "girlie" shopping spree.
It was not a happy experience as we were met by rudeness and often sheer indifference in most shops.
I have to praise Beaverbrooks the jewellers for their polite and helpful staff but they were sadly in the minority.
We ventured out again with my very pregnant daughter. Ladies will sympathise – where are all the toilets in Blackpool? Bhs had a flood and a queue. Even M&S had only one cubicle in use and a queue.
In Bhs the food that was available was uncovered with customers sneezing and coughing near it. We were shouted at that many items were not available so we took the sensible option and left.
We went into Pizza Hut as a desperate measure. What a happy accident. Friendly pleasant staff, reasonable prices and hot fresh food. We got tap water with no pressure to buy bottled and our waitress was delightful. It gave us hope. They even have clean toilets! May I suggest all shop staff be trained by Pizza Hut.
I was hoping to move back to the area to be near to my family but I think I may persuade them to move away. It is a matter of shame for all residents that you continue to put up with such low standards in the retail outlets of a town that is famous for its welcome.
I understand now why Scottish friends raise their eyebrows when I tell them we are visiting Blackpool. After my treatment this last visit, I shall not stick up for it again.
Manners cost nothing but are in very short supply in Blackpool. Shame on you.

Fouling up in town centre
A beggar was walking his dog on Church Street across from the Grand Theatre and outside Currys. The dog looked ready to foul and eventually did on the pavement.
I told the owner to clear it up. He said he did not have a bag so he just left it there, giving out a very bad smell. The public walking past stood in it, needless to say.
I waited for someone, such as street cleaner or community support officer or police. Each of these would, I expect, do something about wiping it up. This was too much to expect of each of them. Each was told, each made an excuse to pass it on to someone else.
In the end a street cleaner did clean it up.
The streets are once again getting full of dog dirt, I thought it was an offence to leave. Seemingly not.
The police ride down Church Street on horseback and often the horses empty themselves of the last meal. The landaus are not allowed to foul, yet no attempt is made by the police to wipe it up. It is just left in the middle of Church Street. I call this a bad example.
Why do people want pay rises yet cannot do the duties they are paid to do now?

Billy remembered
IT is 25 years ago today since Billy Fury passed way at just 42, having lost his battle with heart illness.
Billy's career was most impressive with 29 hit singles, six hit albums, three best selling EPs, three film appearances, extensive TV, radio and touring, as well as membership of the Songwriters' Guild. This was all virtually unheard of in pre-Beatles Britain.
The Sound of Fury, the official fan club, is dedicated to keeping alive his music and memory and continues to grow. Members meet three times a year at his grave in London and several special events are planned this year for a true pop idol still sadly missed by hundreds of fans. We welcome new members from the Fylde coast.

Great service in my need
I had an accident in December, resulting in a fractured ankle and subsequently used the Blackpool ambulance service and Victoria Hospital.
We hear so many horror stories about the NHS that I felt compelled to tell you the treatment I received was first class.
The ambulance arrived quickly and the crew, headed by Sue, were professional and caring.
The hospital staff were the same. From assessment, treatment, x-ray and admission to Ward 33, the care and treatment were excellent. I was also pleased to note the standards of cleanliness and food were very good.
Blackpool residents should be aware of the services available to them in times of need.

Get rid of these lap dancers
I'd love to know why Mathew Haycox wants to pollute a lovely family town like Blackpool, with lap dancers (The Gazette, January 17).
Surely he can't have a family of his own. All that money he has and all his thoughts are to create sex and depravity in dens that would be better in Soho, London. We want to better our town, not degrade it. Get rid of them all and we'll get rid of the sleaze balls that frequent them. Don't give up, Coun Callow.

Rural roads not top priority
Re "Grit call for small roads" (The Gazette, January 2), I would like to thank Coun Simon Renwick for his concern regarding the dangers of untreated rural roads.
Fortunately, in our area of rural Fylde, we are well represented by Coun Liz Oades, our excellent hardworking county councillor who brought the dangerous conditions to the notice of LCC highways department.
As ward councillor for Treales, Roseacre and Wharles and also Newton, Clifton and Salwick, I am kept busy looking after the concerns of my residents.
We both reported the dangerous conditions to LCC whose staff were under great pressure but much as we all want roads major and minor treated, rural roads are not a priority.
Coun Renwick need not be too concerned. I am more than capable of dealing with problems in my ward, with Coun Oades.
