TOP opposing councillors have shown a united front in a bid to see a top of the range skate park built in Wyre.

Conservative councillor Andrea Kay and Fleetwood’s Labour member Terry Rogers said the facility was a “must have” for the borough.

And at recent meeting of Fleetwood Town Council residents backed calls for a modern skate park to be built on the seafront between Cleveleys and Fleetwood.

Rossall ward Coun Rogers told The Gazette: “We have been asking for this for a couple of years now but seem to be getting nowhere fast.

“Parents in Fleetwood are desperate for a recreational space where their children can go, our kids have a bad reputation but there is nothing for them to do.

“Instead of criticising and bad mouthing we need to offer them somewhere to go, where they can be involved and socialise. How often do you see kids on the street, skateboarding or rollerblading on the Promenade, it’s because we don’t have a facility.”

In 2006, Cleveleys councillor Andrea Kay, set up a skating club for youngsters.

She said: “It has proved extremely popular and is the sort of thing our kids love, they have even started doing it in schools. I have taken my kids all over the country to look at the different parks and the type of equipment they would like, there are some amazing sites in Europe.

“That is what we want, if we are going to do it we want to do it properly and hold competitions at the venue.

“It would be fantastic to have such a great facility between Fleetwood and Cleveleys, it would extend the tourism coastline from Blackpool to Fleetwood.

“The next step is funding and in the coming weeks we will be speaking to people regarding grants.”

Wyre Council has told them all funds are committed elsewhere for the next two years.

Coun Lynne Bowen, cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “Wyre has spent almost £350,000 on children’s recreation facilities in Fleetwood over the last three years. But it’s certainly a proposal we’ll consider for future years if funding can be identified.”
