From super sculptures to stories...school’s global project was great fun
Far-flung places across the globe were the inspiration for an exotic Culture Sculpture Gallery at this Bispham school.
Parents took a magical mystery tour on an ambitious papier-mache landscape at Bispham Endowed Primary.
From ponds of rainbow-coloured tropical fish, vibrant tribesman, towering statues and headwear featuring larger than life wild animals – it was uncharted territory for children.
And getting imaginations running riot was the theme behind the gallery, according to Janette McCormick, deputy headteacher at the school.
She said: “Parents and carers were amazed by the creativity the children had shown when they came into school to visit our Culture Sculpture Gallery.
“Each class was asked to showcase a sculpture, which they had produced to represent a particular continent.
“I was very impressed with the efforts of every class.
“The high standard of sculpture, and the obvious pride the children took in their creation, was a reflection of the enjoyment and learning pupils experienced over this exciting and creative week”.
The normal timetable was thrown out of the window, as the pupils enjoyed a multicultural arts week.
A huge range of activities were arranged. Children’s author Saviour Pirotta paid a visit, as did local storyteller Spellbinder, who kept the children enthralled with his tales.
There was colourful Bollywood dancing, trips to the Grundy Gallery in Blackpool, and numerous creative activities in the classroom and outdoors.
The Culture Sculpture Gallery formed a climax to the week as parents were invited in.
Children used a massive range of materials, including recycled items like bottles and cardboard boxes, as well as paint, coloured paper and glitter, to bring their creations to life.
Pupils from each key stage learnt about cultures from different continents, Australasia was studied by the infants, and America by the lower juniors.
Mrs McCormick added: “Both children and staff at Bispham Endowed had a very exciting week. At the end, pupils entertained each other in a celebration assembly, where they performed a song or dance from the continent they had studied.”
Adam Quayle, from Year 5, said: “The week was really good fun. We moved from task to task, each one more exciting than the one before”.
Lewis Bowes said: “It was amazing, we all had a great week”.
