SUPER-duo The Pet Shop Boys have given their blessing to Blackpool's newest lighting spectacular.
The chart-topping pair have recorded a special welcome to visitors to Brilliance in Birley Street – and have created a montage of their hits, which has been programmed into the high-tech sound and lighting experience.

Chris Lowe, who is from Blackpool and a formed Arnold pupil, and Neil Tennant tell people: "Welcome to the Brilliance sound and light show here in Blackpool.

"The show features some of our most loved music.

"We hope you enjoy the show."

The £3.5m scheme, which takes its inspiration from Freemont Street in Las Vegas, has taken more than 60,000 man hours to create.

Lighting designer Greg McLenahan has overseen the project.

He said: "We asked the Pet Shop Boys if they would do something for us and they agreed, which is fantastic.

"They haven't yet seen it in action but hopefully they will be able to come to Blackpool to see it.

"It's great to see how people react to Brilliance.

"People appear out of nowhere on even the dampest, darkest night and just start dancing! It has become a tourist magnet already.

"What we have created is not only a light show, but an arena for events."

Six steel arches, each 11 metres in height and fitted with amplifiers and projectors make up Brilliance, which has been funded by European money, the Government and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

Work has been dogged by technical problems, which meant the arches had to be redesigned. Eventually the street will be flagged in the same block paving that has been laid in nearby St John's Square.

The plaza is also lit up, with the stained glass windows of St John's Church magically illuminated from within, The Wave sculpture emitting a bluey-green glow, and the multi-coloured dancing fountains all combining to bring the area to life after dark.

Excellant for the likes of me and those above, however, what safe guards are there in place for my Nephew and many thousand others who have Epilepsy, that is known to react to lights like this. Don't want to be a Kill Joy, but some people have really bad reactions to this sort of lighting. In a Nightclub, its avoidable for them, in the street they either miss out of were they wanted to go or suffer. I also Suspect that this will be a magnet for trouble and vandalism. Sorry to be a kill joy, but this needs pointing out. However I really like it and if the council want to sell it off Cheap, I'll buy it for my Bedroom lol

In these times of economic downturn, reccession and rising unemployment, lets spend £3.5mill on improving the town centre.Lets spend it all on a few lights in a back street no-where near the centre, where no-one goes at night, then lay off a load of our staff because we,ve no money left.
Is that how the council meeting went when our glorious leaders spent OUR money?Surely im not the only person who considers this nothing more than a joke played on the households of Blackpool to show how much money they can waste and hoe untouchable and unaccountable these council officials really are?
Blackpool has some awsome builings which are simply being left to rot,the town centre is a dirty hovel and for standard of average living Blackpool rates as one of the worse place in the country to live,so faced with this knowledge what is the best way of spending a barrow full of money,on a few bulbs and steel on a back street that no-one ever visits.
Who-ever came up with the decision to build this monstrosity should be made to repay the wasted money and sacked from his/her job immediately!!!!!!
Ive recently left working for the council and have seen first hand of the sheer incompetence that has led to wasting of tens and tens of thousands of pounds,THEY work for the council and THEY are untouchable, left in there ivory towers without any concept of reality, wasting YOUR money for fun.

I hope that no-one lives above any of the shops on Birley Street - talk about noise and light pollution!

It will, no doubt, start attracting gangs of drunk hen night girls prancing around and getting their chests out. So I'm all for it.

I can tell you're someone who has a gripe with the council, what a bitter posting.
This sort of thing is exactly what the town needs and will encourage more private investment in a dull area of town.
Having walked through this display during a test on Thursday night, I can tell you it's FANTASTIC.
Stop slagging off Blackpool. Get behind the town for once.
I'm all for this, makes me proud of my town. Driving in on Seasiders way looks miles better, the prom looks the business and now st john's square.
Keep up the good work and ignore hidden agendas.

Very nice I am sure but whats the point of it stuck down there, nothing open after 5.30pm and even if cafes were open its too cold to sit outside when the lights are on

Why doesn't the council pay it's transport bill instead and do something good for a change?
