At last something that really does put the WOW! factor back into Blackpool.
After a summer season which has so far looked like spelling doom and gloom for the future of showbusiness and pretty much everything else in the resort comes a gold shoot of recovery which must surprise even the most blatant wearer of rose-coloured spectacles.

A Royal Command Show! A visit of Her Majesty the Queen! A Royal Box for her to sit in? (All right, two out of three's not bad because the Opera House hasn't boasted a Royal Box since the last one was torn down to accommodate the props and fittings for what became Blackpool's biggest ever show – the smash hit musical Cats.)

And, unlike so many of the town's other positive stories, this is one bit of good news which we don't have to wait years and years to come to fruition.

It's here in December, screened in December and we'll be enjoying the big build-up for the next six months.

That really is the kind of publicity you can't buy.

So who's on? Who cares? That's like finding out that Blackpool FC have been given a by into the FA Cup Final and then asking "but who are we playing?"

We know that Britain's Got Talent winners Diversity will be dancing their socks off – and let's just quietly forget they won the show that delivered a body blow to Blackpool when its audition judges proclaimed Blackpool didn't have talent after all.

Ha! At least we've got the Royal Variety Performance and we've got the mighty Opera House.

We're even prepared to put on the back burner the fact the country's biggest theatre has a question mark hanging over its future and is in desperate need of a bit of tender loving care.

Doubtless the Winter Gardens won't be the only place in Blackpool smelling of fresh paint and looking sparkly new by the time Her Majesty waves her regal hand to the gathered crowds on the newly pedestrianised St John's Piazza.

So as you sing God Save The Queen on December 7 just be thinking – perhaps The Queen has helped save Blackpool (and its Opera House).

Maybe the event should have a wartime feel to it given that the Winter gardens looks like it hasnt seen a lick of paint since then & most of the town centre looks like its twinned with Dresden

^ There's always one.
Instead of smart-a*sed remarks that aren't even close to be funny, why cant you just be happy for the resort. This is absolutely brilliant news and a very well written article.

Sheepdog, thats exactly why Blackpool is like it is, needless comments that just slag the town off, if it's so bad go and live somewhere else.

if you had half a brain you would realise that there is tremendous work going on in and around the winter gardens and teh town centre.

These things just don't happen overnight.

But why all is all the 'tremendous work' going on at this time of year when visitors are likely to be in town? Last time I was in the centre of Blackpool, it looked like a bomb site (Church Street, Cedar Square, Birley Street), which is probably where the Dresden reference comes in. Taking into account that and certain long-term roadworks (!), it is much more convenient and attractive for those of us who live in the greater Fylde to go and spend our money in Preston and beyond. It might be a case of 'no pain, no gain' in terms of doing up Blackpool but building sites all over town leave a lasting impression and why not do the work at a time of year when there are likely to be fewer visitors around? Or is it the case these days that the summer is of less importance than the Illuminations season? Maybe the fact that her Majesty is due in town in December might prompt them to get a move on.

It's not so much the time of year that is the issue here in terms of the refurb., but the 'time it takes'. Ever wonder why Blackpool lost the casino bid? We qualified, but central government knew that Manchester could get the job done before we all died of old age. Blackpool? LOL!!!

So, as D Baron agrees with my comment, it is taken down as 'unsuitable' because it is critical of the state of Blackpool town centre this summer. There's nothing like free speech, eh?

Hi Nick... The "Report Unsuitable" self-moderating option on here makes true debate impossible. Anyone can cancel a post, even kids who are still up way past their bedtime. It is time the Gazette removed the option in favour of staff moderation.
