THIS is the super casino that could scupper Blackpool's plans of becoming the UK's answer to Las Vegas.
Plans for the huge complex have been unveiled by Premiership giants Manchester United which wants to build it next to the Old Trafford ground.
The Red Devils – also the richest club in the world – are to apply to the Government for one of the licenc
es which will become available under the new gambling bill.
But economic bosses in Blackpool today said they were not overly concerned about the threat posed from the former English champions.
Alan Cavill, head of corporate policy and development at Blackpool Council, said: "There will be one regional casino in the first wave and we don't think that the Man Utd proposal will cause too much of a problem to ours.
"From what we have been told the United proposal will be part of the second wave of regional casinos which are due to be announced around 2011. As far as we are concerned the Old Trafford complex will not be considered as a bid for the first wave of regionals which Blackpool is interested in."
The Old Trafford casino complex has taken two years to bring to the bidding stage and was unveiled in conjunction with Las Vegas Sands, owner of the Venetian casino hotel in Las Vegas.
The complex will include a five-star hotel, restaurant and a health club.
The developers have said if the Man Utd casino is given the green light by the Government it would be the largest cultural village outside of Central London.
It would transform the skyline around Salford Quays, which is already dominated by the 67,000 capacity Old Trafford stadium and the Lowry Museum.
Andy Anson, Manchester United commercial director, said: "The club is delighted to be part of this project.
"If selected, it will provide first-class entertainment and accommodation on one of the most famous sporting sites in the world, create jobs and generate income for the local economy."
The plans have already had the backing of Trafford Council and, if passed, will add extra revenue to the club.
A decision on the first regional casino is not expected to be made until at least the end of next year when bids have been submitted.
But Mr Cavill believes that Blackpool is still front runner in the race to the first regional casino in the resort.
