POSTMASTER Peter Collins delivered an emphatic victory as he trounced former council leader Roy Fisher in Blackpool's Park Ward by-election.
The Conservative, who runs the post office on Grange Park, last night polled more than twice as many votes as his nearest rival.

Coun Collins received 977 votes compared to 448 for Mr Fisher, the former Labour group leader, and 218 for BNP candidate Les Joy.

UKIP candidate Colin Porter and Liberal Democrat Susan Close failed to break out of double figures.

Coun Collins is the first Conservative to represent the ward – a traditional Labour stronghold – for more than 20 years.

With a beaming smile across his face, the new Blackpool councillor said: "This was a brilliant result and I'm so grateful to the people across the community who have voted for me.

"We have fought a strong, positive campaign and have tried to encourage more people to get involved with us on the big issues in our area."

Tory council leader Peter Callow added: "This is a huge result for the Conservative party and personal victory for Peter who is a fantastic candidate.

"I think a lot of people in Blackpool will see this as a massive vote of confidence in the Conservative administration and our policy of trying to clean up the resort.

"I don't think there has been a Conservative representative in Park ward since as long as I can remember and this may indicate a major shift of public opinion."

A disappointed Mr Fisher, who was praised by Coun Collins for his campaign, said: "Clearly we're disappointed.

"It's a difficult result for us and a bad result obviously for Labour. I think it's a lot to do with the current climate as regards to the national picture."

However, he refused to be drawn on whether he would make another bid to get back on to the council.

"That's not up to me," he said. "It's up to the electorate and the Labour party locally if they wish to choose me to be a candidate, but I'm very happy to continue to fight hard for the Labour party."

The by-election was held following the death of former Labour councillor Les Kersh, who died in April.

Congratulations Mr Collins and congratulations to those in Park ward who didn't vote for Fisher you made the right decision. A councillor that will truly represent the area.

Congratulations to Mr Collins. I agree with True Blackpudlian, a councillor who will represent the area. Who did so long before he became a councillor. Someone who actually knows the area he will represent and knows the needs and wants. Well done.

Congratulations to Mr. Collins. Although I am totally disenchanted with Politics at the moment those who constantly rubbish Peter Callow on this Forum must surely see from this that he now has an overwhelming Mandate to run this Town from real genuine " Grass Roots " people here.

Great result for Blackpool. The last thing we need is a return to the failed policies of the Labour Council who did so much harm to the town. For the Tories to get double the Labour vote in their Park Ward stronghold is amazing and on a par with losing their deposit in Henley.

I have voted labour all my life and this is the first time I didn't. I agree with blackpool_needs_progress, labour are now doing more harm than good and its time for a change. Peter is an asset to Grange Park as the postmaster and i am sure he will do his best to represent the people of Park Ward. I think labour need to worry with the results of both Park Ward and Henley - maybe its time for a general election? I wish Peter luck and I hope he does a good job for Grange Park and Park Ward in general. Things need to change; Blackpool needs regeneration quickly and people need to feel more secure and if that means a change from labour, then so be it!

Laugh, I nearly choked on my cornflakes! A Conservative winning a seat in Park Ward is akin to Thatcher being made honorary life president of the N.U.M. Mind you, the Labour candidate was the former failed, and discredited, council leader. Labour is all but finished unless it understands that it cannot alienate its core support (the working class) by pandering to big business, and being spineless over Europe.

Before this is reported unsuitable (which is what happened to my comment yesterday), I would suggest that Labour concentrate on trying to win back their core support rather than burying their heads in the sand (Brighton sand in Marsden’s case).
