A SEX swap soldier says she has been overwhelmed by messages of support since her story featured in The Gazette.
Jan Hamilton, who lives in Lytham, told the extraordinary story of her transformation from a 16-stone paratrooper to a Size 10 woman.

The highly decorated officer, who served in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq, was convinced she should have been born a woman and became the first paratrooper in the history of the British Armed Forces to undergo a sex-change operation.

Para who became a woman

The transformation Jan underwent was also featured in a Channel 4 documentary.

Since then, the 43-year-old – who was once married – says she has been inundated with messages from well-wishers and people offering her support.

She said: "It's been quite surprising really and a little overwhelming, but lovely. I am so grateful to the people of Blackpool and Lytham.

"At times it's had me in tears. I can't believe people are being so wonderful.

"I would say 98 per cent of the correspondence has been nice. People have been genuinely supportive. Anton's Cafe in Lytham, which was featured in the documentary has also had lots of people calling or leaving letters.

"I must have had 50 e-mails. A guy came up to me in the street the other day, just hugged me. He said my story had brought out some issues for him.

"I have had messages from guys, some who would like to take me out."

Jan is currently taking action against the Army after it withdrew a job offer from her when she revealed her sex change.

She said: "I am due to go to court again in 10 days' time and I have been getting scared about it. But the fact people are supporting me means a lot."

Jan is now looking for a job and is busy with TV appearances and magazine articles.

She said: "I am hoping to work with voluntary and support groups. My aim is to try to help people understand what transgender people go through and to help others who might be going through the same."

A voice calling in the wilderness,

28/03/2008 12:46:24
There is no doubt this lady has suffered for what she has been through and hopefully Jan, who has pursued her goal will have achieved an 'inner' peace, but at what price? Some might say she is courageous, but others might suggest she has been selfish and self-centred. I have no doubts that Jan will find a partner, especially after all this sympathetic publicity - and I genuinely hope she finds happiness, but in doing so she leaves in her wake, a family, despite their apparent lack of love and loyalty, sad, hurt and suffering and the real victim in all this has to be the former wife, who has been lied to and deceived. Anybody going to care for her and will she appear sympathetically in the press and have offers of dates? I assume, behind the scenes and away from the fickle press, the family and friends are picking up the pieces. The only possible winner in all this is Jan and I only wish she had be brave enough earlier, rather than spoil the lives of others.
I hope and pray for everyone concerned there will be enough warmth left to enable healing, forgiveness and reconciliation.

Many years ago, in the 70's I undertook the same process as Jan. I was a nightmare and I am gratified to read that she did not have to suffer the same discrimination, rejection and abuse that I had to endure - and am I still having to endure. It make me wonder whether Jan is actually painting a real picture of the realities of changing genders or .....

We’re getting the news here in New York about Jan. I didn't see the channel 4 show as I'm in the States now but I'm amazed at how things have changed since I was in Britain and in the TA. It was really tough going for a soldier then. You had lot of racial jokes and fights broke out alot over stupid things. But I am amazed at this Para's bravery to go through with this today. I remember training with the paras in Germany back in 1980. I always respected the Regiment and their history, (what happen at Arnhem still brings a tear to the eyes) but her story growing up is what drove him to become a her and the Para's are irrelevant. It all comes down to finding happiness and your gonnna do what you need to do to achieve that goal. I agree with 'The wheels have fallen off' though. The whole thing is cheapened when the papers and the reality shows get a hold of it and sell it off as sensationalism. Jan needs to watch out because she is in danger of cheapening herself and her cause in the eyes of the people and if she's not careful could end up the real the biggest loser! Peace to all!
