A FYLDE coast couple caught up in the devastation of Hurricane Wilma were today frantically trying to get married before being sent back to Britain.
Leigh-Anne Halliwell and Craig Daniels and their 20-strong wedding party were due to fly home today from Mexico as part of a mass evacuation of 8,000 tourists.
The South Shore couple would have to cancel their wedding – due to take place tomorrow –
to get on the plane.
Terri Howard, licensee at The Dunes Hotel on Lytham Road, whose partner Jimmy Drinkwater is among those staying at the hotel in Playa del Carmen, just outside Cancun, said: "They had planned to get married tomorrow, but will probably be flying back today.
"They have a reception planned in England, so they have been frantically running around trying to get someone in the area to perform the ceremony before they come home."
Blackpool businessman Steve Townsend was also set to fly home in the next few days after being holed up in a shelter since the 150mph hurricane struck.
Wife Karen, who told how her husband had come face-to-face with armed looters in a Cancun school shelter, said the 41-year-old will fly home via Chicago on Thursday or Friday.
Mrs Townsend, of Bentinck Avenue, South Shore, said today: "He has been moved to a shelter belonging to the hotel where conditions are better."
