RESIDENTS furious over plans to build flats for the homeless in St Annes are stepping up their protest.
The campaigners will tonight head to Lytham's Lowther Pavilion to fight against a scheme which would see 11 flats built at the junction of St David's Road and Heeley Road.
Fylde Council's Scrutiny Committee referred the decision to sell the council-owned site – then make an equivalent donation to Muir Group Housing Association – to tonight's full meeting of the council.
Around 100 protesters gathered outside the town hall last Tuesday and the Heeley Road Hostel Group hope residents will turn out in force once more.
Bob Dagnall, chairman of the Heeley Road Hostel Group, said: "We hope a few concerned residents and the wider community will go to the meeting tonight to let all the councillors know the strength of feeling on this matter.
"The sale of assets for less than they are worth is something that affects all of us.
"We're about to lose St Annes swimming pool for a shortage of money and now they want to give land away."
Residents living near the site for the proposed flats say they fear increased crime and devaluation of their properties.
Others say the cashed-strapped council should sell the land at competitive price.
Carol Lanyon, 46, of St Leonard's Road East, said: "Why are they just giving land away when they can't even keep the baths open? My son has just come up to the age where he should be having swimming lessons but he won't be able to have them."
Lynn Heywood, 57, of Heeley Road, said: "The council shouldn't hand the land to them on a platter. They are using our council land so they should utilise it for our own people – for young couples who can't get on the property ladder."
Fylde Council say the scheme is in line with government guidance on supporting low-cost housing developments and is not at nil cost to Muir Group Housing Association.
A spokesman for Fylde Council said: "If the full council agree with the decision the Cabinet made then the decision stands and it will be effective as and then.
"If they disagree with the decision they will make recommendations to the Cabinet who will then discuss it once more.
"They will then either make a new decision or keep with the original one."
Tonight's full council meeting will take place at Lowther Pavilion from 7pm
