EXAMS are over – it's celebration time!
Hundreds of children at Layton Primary School helped year six pupils celebrate the end of their SATs exams with a spectacular synchronized dance routine yesterday.

The playground was bathed in a sea of twirling red and white as 630 pupils took a break from lessons to perform a special dance to hit What Time Is It? from the much-loved Disney film High School Musical 2.

Jumping up and down and waving their hands in the air wasn't only a great way for the year six pupils to relieve their exam stress, it gave the whole school chance to celebrate an end-of-exams event dubbed Friendship Friday.

Headteacher Lynne Harrowell said: "It's a fantastic opportunity for the children to come together to show how important it is to have friends.

"It's also a good way to launch our health week and we wanted to say well done to our year six children who finished their SATs today.

"It's wonderful to see all the children singing and dancing."

And the pupils were certainly breathing a sigh of relief as they enjoyed the freedom of dancing outside with their friends.

Nathan Walker, 11, said: "I really enjoyed the dancing. It was good so we could relieve our exam stress."

Fellow pupil Danielle Wilkin, 11, said: "It was fantastic. We've been working really hard so it was fun to be outside dancing."

Pupils donated 50p each to dress in their own red and white clothes with proceeds being donated to The Gazette-backed MRI scanner appeal, Blackpool's A Knockout.

Year one pupil Kaitlyn Sarjantson, five, had really polished her dance moves.

She said: "I liked jumping up and down, it was fun. I love High School Musical."

The children also made friendship hats to wear especially for Friendship Friday.

Year two pupil Rachel Turner, seven, said: "We've made hats out of paper in the shape of hands and written nice things about each other on them."

Katie Smith, administration assistant at the Lynwood Avenue school, choreographed the routine. She said: "High School Musical is so popular with the children so they really enjoyed it.

"I made a video of the routine and then a copy was given to each class so they could practise. They did so well."

The school's health week, which starts on Monday, will give children a chance to try exotic fruit and learn about yoga and specialist sports.

Parents and children will also be encouraged to walk to school.
