PLEASURE Beach bosses expect thousands more families will pour through the gates after unveiling a £10m cash injection.
There were celebrations taking place at the South Shore attraction today after the fun park clinched a deal with entertainment giant Nickelodeon to create a six-acre plot dedicated to the channel's favourite characters.

Spongebob Squarepants and Dora The Explorer will welcome children on 14 new rides after investment was clinched with Blackpool Council and the Pleasure Beach for the new attraction which will open next April.

More than 270 jobs will be created in a UK first for Nickelodeon who told The Gazette they chose Blackpool for its "family values".

Nick Thompson, deputy managing director for the Pleasure Beach, said: "This really is exciting news for the attraction and Blackpool as a whole.

"There will be new rides, attractions and of course the stars of world-famous TV characters.

"The investment has been from the business and other funding sources.
"It's an exciting time for everyone involved in this project and I can't wait for it to open."

Kiaran Saunders, vice-president and commercial director for Nickelodeon UK, said: "We looked at a number of towns but Blackpool is a national treasure and its family values meant there was no other place for it to be.

"The characters and Blackpool will hit it off perfectly."

Blackpool Council stumped up half the funding for the deal in way of a business loan.

Coun Peter Callow, council leader, said: "This is a fantastic day for the Pleasure Beach and Blackpool as a whole. This ties in perfectly with our family-led objectives."

Good news.

Just wondering what area it will be regenerating? Will it be the Bradley Beaver (Kids) area?

"Blackpool Council stumped up half the funding for the deal in way of a business loan"

So did Blackpool council loan £5million of council tax payers money to the Pleasure Beach?

If so why did the Pleasure Beach not borrow it of the banks or did the banks see it as "too risky"?

What security did they recieve for the loan and what interest rate and what term did the council achieve ?

Please remind me how many staff are being made redundant by Blackpool Council?

I wish the council would come along and give my business a loan.

Some serious questions there Mr Callow, a response would be nice for all I know you could have a water tight deal but I somehow doubt it.

If they want to become family friendly drop the park entrance fee.

I have a young son who is 18months and an older daughter who is 4 will I pay the admission price to wander around with my son and wife while my daughter goes on the rides... No

Make it family friendly!

Shame disney wont buy the pleasure beach and turn it into some great place to visit ,Look at the walls that surround it they hardly inspire you to want to visit inside , The admission fee for spectators is a joke and family orientated sorry i nearly swallowed my own tongue then ,They obviously never seen blackpool full of drunk thugs making families run for cover . Blackpool has great points but its a shame so many are tinged with the smell of a dodgey kebab and too much beer

£5m is the up-front taxpayer cost and the loan was agreed in March at a meeting containing only the following councillors;

Callow, Callow, Fowler, Williams, Henderson, Collins

my wife and i used to go several times a year with our granchildren,we paid for them to go on the rides (wristbands) but no more, i begrudge paying £5 each to take them in,you are nothing more than money grabbers i,m afraid you have seen the last of us.

We can't assume that the Pleasure Beach couldn't get a loan from a bank for this (though the last filed accounts wouldn't have been that encouraging a picture for banks in the current climate) - but it will no doubt have got a loan from the council at a preferable rate to help business development and long term jobs in Blackpool.
