CHARGES are set to rocket by up to 200 per cent at three Blackpool car parks.
Drivers using Banks Street, Gynn Square and Seed Street will be hit in the pocket from next month.

And in a move which is set to further anger motorists hourly charges are to be scrapped at ALL council-run car parks in the resort.

Town Hall bosses said the move was being made to entice shoppers to stay longer in the town centre.

But the changes were today met with anger by hoteliers whose guests use long-stay car parks.

One, Carol Morris, who runs the South-Lea guest house on Willshaw Road, dubbed price hikes "a kick in the teeth".

"Town Hall bosses said the move was being made to entice shoppers to stay longer in the town centre"

or to drive away anyone who wants to pop into town like the locals who don't want to pay for more than 1 hours poarking, or drive away tourists who won't pay extorionate parking fees.

the way to get the people into the town is to reduce the parking costs so people will stay longer as its cheaper to do so.

They have to find the money from somewhere to replace the money they are reluctantly spending on the pot holes they are no longer able to ignore...Easy come easy go

It does appear to be aimed at ensuring locals either go to a superstore or Cleveleys...

How about a split summer and winter tariff or possibly a resident's permit giving 1 hour free parking to council tax payers?

Bah that is a shame about the Gynn Square one as I've used that quite a few times.

I've worked all over the country and I am constantly bemused by the short sightedness and incompetence of our council.
Short term gain for long term loss.
And the roads are a disgrace.
Sooner we replace this Tory lot the better, if it isn't already too late!

Next award for Blackpool - highest parking charges in England?

Agree with #5, short sighted short term gain!

Buses that take a lifteime to get to the town , parking charges that make it more economic to drive to a rail station & take the train to Preston & Mr Callow says he doesnt want Preston stealing Blackpools shoppers , they dont steal them , this town gift wraps them with a large red ribbon.

Yes the town does get gridlocked , but there are solutions such as park & ride & a novel concept of reducing the bus fares to entice people to use the buses. You cant keep 'taxing' into submission the very people you need to keep the town afloat. Maybe Mr Callow only wants people who reside in the inner area to shop in Blackpool seeing as they only have to stagger down from Talbot & Central Dive to shop at the 'retail revival' that is TJ Hughes & all the other cheapy chav shops. The alienation of the afluent areas continues apace & its quite clear that Blackpool doenst want people with money shopping here.

Northern Rail, Transpennine Express & Preston city council must rub their hands with glee everytime the parking charges get hiked up here.

Dreadful decision. I will now think again about going into town if I can find it cheaper on the Internet.

As for the smelly, dirty buses: £1 each way from Caunce Street to town, 3 stops a journey of 1 mile, or £1 per mile per person, 2 persons return = £4, a complete rip off!

totally agree but no matter who you replace them with, you can bet that they will not reduce any of these charges.
