A TOWN centre eaterie destroyed in the Yates's fire has risen from the ashes.
When the Subway sandwich store became one of the victims of the devastating blaze in Blackpool, franchisee Phil Hough feared the worse.

His Clifton Street business lay in ruins following the inferno and he feared he would lose everything.

Mr Hough was forced to make life-changing sacrifices in a bid to resurrect the business.

Insurance paid out £175,000 for the damage to the store, while he received a £17,000 grant from Blackpool Council.

The rest, around £250,000, Phil had to find himself by re-mortgaging his Blackpool home and borrowing cash from his family.

He also had to cancel a six-week trip to Thailand with his partner Kinga Lak.

Now, nine months later, he has opened a new fast-food outlet just yards from the blaze which destroyed an important part of the town's heritage.

After spending more than £450,000, Mr Hough has transformed a two-storey derelict store on Market Street and opened his second Subway franchise in the resort.

However, a week before the new store was due to open, vandals smashed the front window.

But that did not stop him.

Mr Hough, who also owns Subway on Whitegate Drive, said: "It's been the toughest nine months of my life. The banks wouldn't lend me money so I had to re-mortgage my home and borrow off my family. Without them, I could not have rebuilt the business.

"At the time I was devastated and wondered how I could rebuild the business. It's taken nine months of heartache and hard work but I have managed to do it.

"Fortunately I did not have to lay any staff off as I was able to use them in my Whitegate Drive store."

Outstanding commitment, well done sir. If only the scumbag insurance companies had paid out what you should have got you wouldn't have had to remortgage your home while they claim all their bonuses.

I hope you do really well and I will certainly be popping in for my dinner soon.

I wish Mr Hough every success, Blackpool needs more people like him. I will make a point of buying something in there just to support him.

Good for you, Mr Hough, for not allowing the banks to dampen your spirits. Some banks don't seem to have any problems paying out huge bonuses to their executives and their shareholders, even if the money they are paying out did come from the Bank of England, and was meant for other purposes.

Now this is what I like to hear :D Well done Mr Hough, I work in the town centre and was pleasantly surprised when on my lunch, I was wondering about the town thinking what to have, then, as if my magic, there was a subway. I cannot explain my gratitude as I was able to have my favourite thing whilst on my lunch. Well done you for not letting it get you down and sacrificing everything. If only everyone was like you. :)

Well done Mr Hough. I don't shop often in Blackpool but will certainly buy lunch from you when I do, healthier and tastier than Burger King all the luck in the world from now on. Best wishes to you and all your staff.

Nice one Phil, as a regular of both of your Subways for the last 10 years, I'd just like to say I'm delighted for you and all your friendly staff. See you Saturday as usual, no doubt!
