WORK will begin before the end of the year on a new £3.5m square for Blackpool town centre after the ambitious scheme was given planning permission.
Blackpool Council's development control committee has approved the proposals for the St John's precinct in front of St John's Church.

Meanwhile, designers will sit down at a brain-storming meeting on Tuesday to discuss possible replacements for the 10-metre high metal steel sculpture which had been earmarked as the centrepiece of the project.

Soaring metal costs forced the council to scrap the sculpture last month.

Alternative suggestions have included a statue of a Blackpool personality such as legendary clown Charlie Caroli, or some kind of water feature.

Coun Maxine Callow, cabinet member for regeneration and tourism on Blackpool Council, said: "We are looking at all possibilities but we want something that will stand the test of time.

"We need something that is going to enhance the area and draw people in but we have to get it absolutely right because this is such a focal point and the church is such an attractive building.

"I think it will be wonderful when it's finished and people can sit out and enjoy the cafes in Cedar Square."

One element of the new Cedar Square will be the former Flagstaff Gardens fountain.

The 94-year-old water feature was dismantled to make way for the adventure golf which opened this year at the Pleasure Beach.

The new plaza will see a large area of pedestrianisation incorporating a section of Church Street, on to Abingdon Street and up to the Birley Street junction.

Urban regeneration specialists Leit Werk have designed the scheme which includes a cafe-style piazza, while the area in front of the church will be a hub for events and markets.

A report to planners said: "The space will form a function akin to a town square where events and markets can be held and where people can meet and relax within an attractive setting with pavement cafes adding to the character."

I sincerely hope these won't be the same designers who did the pathetic welcome signs on the roads entering Blackpool and obviously approved by Maxine Callow......have you even noticed them ???? They've been there for 6 months.

This is excellent news that it's finally happening. Once this is done we can hopefully start on the much needed Talbot Gateway.

Any improvement to Blackpool Town Centre is welcome and very much needed - as long as it's tasteful! If only the "undesirables" that grace the town's streets could be encouraged to improve their behaviour - but that is part of a bigger problem that will take years to solve - if at all. Baseball capped and tracksuited youths pushing young children in pushchairs using loud foul language to their "partners" in the process is a sight I encounter every time I visit Blackpool. Oh - and not forgetting those who are either drunk or clearly on drugs. Depressing!

lets hope it doesnt involve some stupidly large piece of metal eye sore ("art work") like the last attempt to do something with the square.

According to Maxine Callow`s comment "We need something that is going to enhance the area and draw people in but we have to get it absolutely right because this is such a focal point and the church is such an attractive building".

Does she honestly think that whatever they put there is going to draw people in???

I don`t think so!!!

Central Government pot hopefully, and about time.

Forget Steel Sculptures, how about a big 'Water Sculpture' something moving images can be projected onto. Checkout futuroscope in France for details, very impressive.

Lets hope they spell charlies name right if they put up a statue to him anywhere

Charlie Cairoli (February 15, 1910 in Milan - February 17, 1980 in Blackpool) was a famous British clown, impressionist and musician. Born to a travelling circus family of French origin, he began his performing career at the age of seven, and, after visiting the Blackpool Tower Circus in 1939, chose to stay.
