THEY'VE been banned from Blackpool for four decades – but it's all over now!
The Rolling Stones, barred from the resort since a riot broke out at their 1964 show at the Empress Ballroom, will get the red carpet treatment – if they bring their next tour to Blackpool.

Blackpool's Council leader Peter Callow says nothing would give him more satisfaction than seeing the veteran rockers put on a big show – perhaps at the new seafront headlands.

Fans will have a chance to spend the night together with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and company when they appear live in the resort via video at Blackpool's Odeon cinema, which is screening Stones biopic Shine a Light.

Were you at The Empress that night? Do you remember the incident? Register for free and leave your comments below.

But as The Stones know all too well, you can't always get what you want – and Coun Callow says the biggest problem that could scupper a return is the lack of a super-sized venue.

"When the Kaiser Chiefs played on the new headlands it was a fantastic event," he said.

"But with all due respect to the Kaiser Chiefs, we might need 20 headlands to house The Rolling Stones.

"They are icons – and I for one would certainly welcome them back.

"It would certainly give me some satisfaction if they did play here!"

Coun Callow said he believed a reappearance from the evergreen rockers would prove popular with music fans – a view shared by local music expert, Terry Regan, of Lincoln Road, Blackpool who attended the original gig.

"The question is, would they want to come back?" he said.

"But I certainly think they would get an ecstatic response.

"They're still going as strong as ever and I don't think what happened will have damaged the Stones' following in Blackpool at all."

Mr Regan also recalled his account of the violent scenes of '64 which led to the ban.

"On that night it was heaving in the ballroom," he said.

"There was a lot of heat in the crowd anyway between visitors and locals and then the Stones were heckled.

"The band ended up being taken off stage by security and there was a lot of trouble and a big police presence.

"It's memorable to say the least."

Super-sized venue required. How about the football ground - perhaps not. You could get more people on the headland!!

It would be fantastic if they could come to Blackpool. But it is like I have said all along, we don't need a stupid casino we need a proper event venue like the MEN or NEC, that would really offer some great regeneration opportunities.

As a sand grown un now living in Geordieland I recall being at a Stones concert in the Empress Ball Room, although I think it was before 1964, maybe they had 2 riots! I went with a girl friend, Linda, and her mother paid for the tickets, ten shillings each (50p)quite a lot in those days as I was an accounts clerk in King Street earning just £2 per week. I recall it was Scotch week and a lot of our friends from Glasgow had far too much to drink as Blackpool pubs opened for an hour later - 10 pm than in Scotland where they shut at 9pm. My abiding memory is of several inebriated Scotsmen swinging on the very large red curtains until they came down, at which point the concert terminated! Happy days.

Is there anyone else banned that we should know about?
Once again the booze fuelled town has become a victim to the later generations who are the ones suffering ! The casino idea was to ensure hopefully a hotel WITH hightech. modern conference faciliteis so events like this could take place. Casinos all over the world tend to be part of a hotel complex wich inturn tends to pay one another financially to prop each other up! That's the only reason a casino should be built in this town; so we the residents can have something out of it too.
That is if they can sit down together private & public sector and sort it out once and for all ! But i doubt it.

I was at the rolling stones concert in 1964 I was 17.There were quite a few other acts on the bill before the stones but I can only remember Heinz. The venue was packed and there were a lot of scottish visitors. The riot started when some of the audience wre spitting at the rolling stones and Keith Richards walked forward and kicked out at someone. Some of the crowd went berserk and the stones left the stage. some people got on the stage and pushed a grand piano off. It was very exciting but the venue was wrecked. The police arrived but they were heavily outnumbered and they seemed to wait until the heat had gone out of the situation before moving in and making arrests. Not a bad night out for 10 bob(50p). I doubt the stones will return to Blackpool as there is nowhere big enough. We should have had a large concert/conference venue years ago.

A concert/conference centre should have been built on the old central station site years ago.Blackpool can only dream of "A" list stars these days.
