A BLACKPOOL MP has been accused of 'flog- ging a dead horse' in his bid to save St George's swimming baths.
Blackpool Council closed the Cherry Tree Road facility earlier this summer amid claims it was outdated and under used.

But Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden has launched a petition in his new campaign to reopen the pool – calling it "a community a
sset".

He said: "It's bizarre at a time when so much effort is being put on public health and obesity by the Government, local councils and health authorities that Blackpool Council should be closing a pool which could help us do this.

"More than 100 people have already signed a petition to review St George's and keep it as a community asset and I'm asking the authority, in light of new Government funding and initiatives, to think again."

Mr Marsden also questioned the amount of swimming space which would be left at the remaining pools at Palatine Leisure Centre on St Annes Road and at Moor Park in Bispham.

"There simply won't be the capacity to take up all this extra money for swimming at Palatine. Many people on Mereside and elsewhere have already said St George's pool is a valuable resource to the area, which should not be lost," he added.

The MP said the Government had offered £100,000 to Blackpool Council to give free swimming to both over 60s and under 16s, which could be used by swimming clubs and to encourage people to take up the sport.

But council leader, Coun Peter Callow today hit back, saying Mr Marsden was "flogging a dead horse".

"The pool was rundown and has now closed," he said.

"Not many people used it and there were no facilities for spectators. We have alternatives with much better facilities and most swimming groups recognise that."

He also laid into the MP, accusing Mr Marsden of being "behind the times" and claiming the MP was trying to use the campaign for political purposes.

"He's flogging a dead horse and with the national situation he is probably looking for a vote winner," Coun Callow said.

"Desperate times call for desperate measures and he is probably trying to hang on to his seat."

Mr Marsden will now write to Coun Tony Williams, the cabinet member responsible for leisure activities, to detail his objections to the closure.

When ever makes anyone think this tired, long past it's sell by date pool should be saved when far better and more popular facilities can be closed, seemingly, without a second though?!

Let's face it, St George's pool is a dump, and it would be a complete waste of council tax payers money to keep it open. Palatine is not that far away for people to go to, and it is 1000% better.

Because it would be ideal for us adults to go and swim because adult swimming facilities for the good folk of Blackpool are extremely limited!
The councillor mentions swimming groups, but what about the general public?
Yes we can go to general swimming but it's overrun with kids and I don't begrudge the kids their fun and exercise at all, but they are generally unsupervised as the lifeguards spend more time chatting (being little more than kids themeselves) than stopping the kids being dangerous. One day at Palatine there will be a serious accident where some innocent adult swimmer is leapt upon by an overenthusiastic kid!
They have no idea whether St. George's would be viable or not because it hasn't been open to the general public-the odinary folk on the street for ages.
I say clean it up a little bit and open it to lane swimmers...see how it goes financially and then decide!

I agree with completely with the first two commenters and the Council. St Georges is a dump, I used to do school swimming lessons there and visited it before it closed and it hadn't changed a bit. Ths outdated dump doesn't need 'saving' it should be bulldozed and money ploughed into the much better facilities at Moor Park and Palatine. This is just blatant political point scoring by an MP who doesn't even care about Blackpool. He won't fight to get us massive regeneration funding but he will campaign to save a pool used by less than 100 people a week because he can score points. This campaign is a joke and won't be supporting it, nor will I be supporting Marsden at the next election, its time he went.

Mp out of date - what a surprise! I'm not part of a minority so he wouldn't be interested in my problems anyway. Roll on election time!!

Of course you're not in the minority, I think most of Blackpool would like to see the back of Marsden and Humble for MPs that will actually do something for Blackpool. Another thought has crossed my mind also. If I remember right the Lido baths closed down under the terrible Labour Council under Roy Fisher yet I don't remember Gordon Marsden making such a song and dance about those baths. Maybe the party colours has something to do with that

Apologies Nick I misread you're comment, but you are right he wouldn't be interested in our problems because he represents the Labour Party before Blackpool
