BLACKPOOL couoncil are selling off some of their historic Illuminations.
The resort's iconic Thunderbird 3 rocket, which has become a resort favourite since it touched down here in 2004, is being sold off.

The Illuminations department is selling the International Rescue spaceship – which was made as a prop for the big screen premiere of the cult science fiction series – together with a number of former Lights' favourites as part of a unique January sale.

While interest in the 60ft high rocket is expected to be "out of this world" also expect a stampede of buyers wanting to get their hands on one of the seven horses that used to light the Gynn Square roundabout carousel which can be snapped up for just £250 each.

Those with a more modest budget can net a Seahorse from the Coral Capers section of lights for £50 and even the pieman from the now defunct Hollands Pies section for a mouth-watering £75.

Keeping with the Thunderbird theme, Michael Wilcock, head of the Illuminations, said the sale is a FAB way of keeping the Illuminations modern and up to date.

He said: "The rocket is a special and unique piece. It's an original piece created for the Thunderbirds film.

"But we are in showbusiness and we need to move on. We don't want to see it scrapped. We hope it will go to a good home."

Mr Wilcock hopes to get a "substantial amount" for the 60ft, eight-ton rocket which stands proudly in Flagstaff Gardens, on South Promenade.

He added: "It's part of our business plan to be as self-sustainable as possible.

"These are features which have not been used for a number of years or no longer have a use. It means we can generate space and money to make new Illuminations."

But sci-fi fanatics are Calling International Rescue.

David Nightingale, owner of Thunderbooks, on Lytham Road, Blackpool, said he has known tourists from Japan to visit the resort to see the rocket.

He said: "It's a shame Blackpool is losing it. It's instantly recognisable. If they'd let me, I'd put it outside my shop on the pavement."

Catherine Simpson, manager at the Doctor Who store, on Victoria Street, Blackpool, said: "It will be missed, it's quite popular. I think they should put a Tardis there instead."

The sale is the first of its kind to be open for traders and members of the public.

Mr Wilcock added: "It's going to be a really interesting day. Some of the pieces have already been reserved."

Councillor Maxine Callow, cabinet member for regeneration and tourism said: "I'm obviously very sad to see these fabulous Illuminations go, but at the same time am very pleased that the public as well as the trade are being given the chance to own such an unusual piece of memorabilia."

Prices for the famous illuminations range from £50 to £350 and a selection of the lights on offer can be found at www.visitblackpool.com/stocksale.

- The sale will take place on Wednesday January 30, 10am to 4pm at the Illuminations depot on Rigby Road.

Family Silver Sale springs to mind!!

I'm all for selling off Blackpool Illumination items that are of no further use, but don't sell of items that are still popular (such as the Thunderbird rocket) a proven visitor attraction for Blackpool.

sell all of them, cancel the illuminations..saves the council and the residents a small fortune....if the businesses want them , then let them pay for new ones and pay for the wholse show.

Unfortunately, it is the sort of negative attitude from previous commentators (BeachComber) that is driving Blackpool into the Irish Sea forever. I am originally from the North West, left and travelled for a good few years but returned in 2006 to open a new business. I have done OK with it, and I am proud to tell people I now live in Blackpool. It is unique, it is entertaining, it is a town with a great heritage.

Sadly, it also houses a large population of itinerants and wasters. My apologies to the TRUE Gypsy population here - I refer to the DSS wasters begging and drugging the town into submission. Blackpool doesnt need vagabonds and thieves. It needs to be welcoming old and new to spectacle and wonder.

Local Business, apart from myself and a few others hereabouts, seem to dig their own graves with all their negativity. Get Angry by all means, but don't just sit and moan and do nothing.Choose another path. Remember - the council is elected and somebody must have voted for them. They are there "working for the public" I know if my employees were not perfoming they would be warned and dismissed. So tell them what you need them to do and keep momentum. You dislike it so much? Pack up and leave. For as long as you tolerate second best you will have nothing else - Put up or push off. I've invested in a future, not poured cash into a death chamber.

Don't turn the lights off - upgrade, invite a new generation to visit a time honoured tradition, but when their coaches pull off at the end of the season, pack all the miserable, self destructors and the traders of filth and chemical nightmares into their wake and take them away.

Well done Mr Positive. You comment is a welcome change from all the usual pessimistic doom and gloom mongers we have to listen to. The Council we have now has only been in office since last year as we ejected our useless uncaring Labour Council last May, (just a shame we couldn't unseat them all). They are doing a great job in getting Blackpool back on its feet.

PS; I complete agree about this town being full of workshy benefit scroungers, ship them away as well I say

How did this get from the Council selling off old illuminations to wanting to ship away benefit claimants?? Granted the Town has more than its fair share of wasters, who can all be seen most days drinking and drugging in the alleyways within the Town center and elsewhere, both of which I,m sure you,ll agree are against the Law, so if the Police wont deal with them, when do you think you should start rounding them up? Maybe we should tattoo a mark on their wrists so we can identify them? As for shipping away benefit claimants does this plan also include Tax Credits because thats a benefit or are we just wanting rid of the ones we don't like? I agree more needs to be done to tackle this blight on the town center but views like yours of rounding them up and shipping them off disgust me!

This got from selling Blackpools assets to Benefit Claimants by way of people complaining about the town yet doing nothing but complain about the town.

I might point out that I suggested those complainers leave with the "miserable, self destructors and the traders of filth and chemical nightmares".

Tax Credits for your information are an in-work benefit. I believe the other responder mentioned "Workshy Benefit Scroungers" so as to distinguish from claimants of Tax Credit maybe?

Yes, the drug taking and public drinking is illegal. Do you support the Police or just criticise when they can't cope due to low funds and officer numbers? The councils "Best Behaviour" Code of Conduct for tourists isn't exactly the way forward when you have too few officers dealing with too many "DO Gooders" trying to protect this blight on our town. A blight I might suggest, encouraged by SOME B&B's who realise a fast buck allowing them in to their otherwise failing "Hotel" , milking Housing Benefit funds and then dumping them out after 6 months of easy street. Yet again, affecting genuine business owners who are prepared to work for a better town, an attractive holiday and day-tripper destination and not looking like a dumping ground for foul and pestilence.

And apart from that - Read Carefully my original missive.
"DSS wasters begging and drugging the town into submission"
"miserable, self destructors and the traders of filth and chemical nightmares"

No mention of Benefit Scroungers. - Over to You
