PUB giant JD Wetherspoon are investing almost £1m in a new Golden Mile pub.
The nationwide chain today revealed plans to convert the former Pricebusters site – situated next to Blackpool Tower – into its latest Fylde coast outlet.

The company, which has more than 700 pubs nationally and was granted a drinks licence for the Blackpool premises in May 2008, aims to have the as-yet unnamed pub open for the summer.

No on-site or opening date has been confirmed, but the purchase was completed earlier this week on the 3,100 sq ft ground floor property.

The development cost is currently estimated at £830,000 and will create around 40 new jobs.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "We are pleased to have purchased the former Pricebusters site and are looking forward to reopening it as a Wetherspoon pub.

"We have enjoyed great success with our existing pub in Blackpool – The Auctioneer on Lytham Road – and the new pub will complement it and we believe be a great asset to the town."

Fantastic news, I love Wetherspoons; great food, good sensibly priced drinks, friendly service and a good clean atmosphere unlike The Castle. Dave Daly is just worried about a bit of competition. I wrote to JDW a few weeks ago and they said they were unsure as to when they were actually opening a branch in the town centre. Also as for the people saying the Council is blocking new licences; this was granted a licence nearly 3 years ago before the flawed 'saturation policy' came in. Welcome to Blackpool, Wetherspoons I look forward to visiting.

There has been some very good letters today, and one learns a lot with people taking the time and trouble to contribute to this forum on the current topics.

Now this is the time Johnson Press should be looking at this site to monitor and control this site re.mass deletions?

Are they going to bother? Or are all contribution letters just pi**ing in the wind?

Interesting???

40 new jobs, nearly £1m investment, part of a disused building used that will definitely attract customers.

And what do I mainly read? Complaints! Not from everyone, to be fair, but for goodness sake!

Yes Little'Un ... but another boozer to fuel the flames of the binging night life in the centre of town?

Not a complaint, just a worry as to what we have already. So many places to drink till you drop it seems.

at last, a pub that will offer a choice of real ales, there are very few pubs in the town centre that do this.

I am afraid to ask BigBlackPudding - as he/she sounds awfully butch. So can someone help please. What does the message mean?

I know it starts off as Weapons of Mass Destruction, but ......?

I can honestly state that I have not spent much time in a JD Wetherspoon PUB., however in reading these comments I think I will be inclined to do so, in order to sample some different beers. I do feel though the town centre is saturated with watering holes, and maybe this should be the last one. But who really cares how I feel and think?

I was hoping for a TGI Friday's or some other type of decent large chain restaurant. One that gives diners table service, instead of forcing their diners to line-up at a bar to place a food order. I don’t want to line-up to place a food order when I go out for a meal. I want a server to come to my table and take my food order and then have that food delivered to my table. If I want to line-up for food I will go to a fast-food establishment, it’s usually cheaper and quicker.

In any event - welcome to Blackpool Town Centre JD Wetherspoon!
