A COUPLE are suing a travel firm after sickness ruined their dream holiday.
Ashley and Catherine Wilkinson, from Anchorsholme, booked the luxury trip to the Dominican Republic to celebrate their first wedding anniversary in January but fell ill just days into the getaway.

Mr Wilkinson, 43, was so ill a doctor had to give him an antibiotic injection.

The pair, who suffered the after-effects for several weeks after flying home, have instructed law firm Irwin Mitchell to sue holiday company First Choice after their disastrous stay at the Fun Royale Hotel.

Mr Wilkinson said: "It was a total nightmare, people talk about holidays from hell - well, this was it.

"I fell ill within two days of being there after I was bitten by fire ants on my legs, ankles and arms.

"Then we both fell ill with stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhoea. It was horrendous."

Mrs Wilkinson, 40, added: "About 70 per cent of the hotel were ill.

"When we tried to speak to the rep, he didn't want to know. When we asked if we could fly home early, we were told there were no seats available

"We were very disappointed with the way we were spoken to and treated.

"Clean bed linen was left on the ground, in the gravel, so dirt and insects could get in and we saw mice in the restaurant.

"There was a tissue found in an omelette and we didn't see them fumigating to get rid of the ants."

Despite being given a further course of antibiotics from their GP after returning home the couple were still unwell for several weeks.

Mr Wilkinson said: "You normally don't want to come home after a holiday, but we were so relieved to be back."We spent most of the time in the hotel room being ill. It wasn't just the money, it was my holiday entitlement which was used up and ruined."

And the couple's solicitor is now demanding First Choice take action to ensure other travellers are protected.

Claire Comiskey, from Irwin Mitchell's international travel litigation team, representing the couple, said: "It's simply not good enough Mr and Mrs Wilkinson's wedding anniversary was ruined by illness.

"First Choice was responsible for ensuring the Fun Royale was safe and suitable for holidaymakers to stay there.

"They let the Wilkinsons down and clearly, they now need to look again and ensure future guests can enjoy their holiday there without being poorly."

A spokeswoman for First Choice said it could not comment in detail on the case because to the risk of inferring with or influencing legal proceedings.

But she said: "At First Choice, the health and safety of our customers is our primary focus. We closely monitor all the hotels to which we operate to ensure the strictest health, safety, hygiene and comfort levels our customers expect are maintained.

"We are genuinely concerned to hear of any illnesses reported in our properties."

Why are they suing First Choice?

Isn't this what travel insurance is for? How is First Choice responsible for them being bitten by fire ants?

Or are they hoping for a big payout to cover some other debts?

If you go to a Third World Country you should accept there is a risk of sickness. The soft Westerner is not geared up to live in these places. Stop crying like babies and live with it. It's any excuse to sue these days

John, how do you get to the conclusion the place was sub-standard? Compared to what?

Would you complain about spicy food or the heat if you went to India in August?

They chose to go on holiday in what is well known to be a 3rd World / Developing nation.

Of course standards will be different! For a lot of people that is all part of the deal - to experience diffent ways of life and cultures. For others it would seem it's just an opportunity to try and get a free holiday and their name in the paper as they pursue an iffy compo claim.

Ady J, it may be an underdeveloped country, but the owners of the complex are probably American, spanish, Canadian or even British. There's no excuse for such terrible sanitary conditions in a hotel complex of this nature. I have a friend that contracted some similar illness and is still suffering 12 months on. Another work colleague has had to have part of his colon removed due to food poisoning, some effects can leave you with cancer or hepatitis conditions that affect you for the rest of your life........ hardly being soft!

"you pays your money and takes your choice," in this economic climate, many people have had to ditch holiday plans, the travel company have no control over indigenous insects, try using repellant, it works. and if there was sickness in the hotel, that is the hotels culpability, not the agent, why have we become such a "compensation claim" nation,

Granted the travel co. have a duty of care but how far do you expect this to extend? If they owned the hotel then fair enough if there was an outbreak of general sickness amongst guests.

However "I fell ill within two days of being there after I was bitten by fire ants on my legs, ankles and arms." would seem to indicate that it was more than likely an allergic reaction.

I doubt even the best of ambulance chasing lawyers would be able to hold that one down to First Choice - unless your suggesting First Choice should follow the example of St. Patrick and rid the Dominican Republic of Fire Ants incase one of their guests gets bitten..

As Sambanista says, try repellant - it's made for a reason.
