The team, who collected the FA Trophy in dramatic fashion just three months ago, kick-off the new season today with a Vodkat Premier Division clash against Maine Road at Kellemargh Park.

It is the first competitive match for AFC Fylde – a name adopted in a bid to increase the club's fanbase – since they clinched the trophy as Kirkham and Wesham at Wembley.

More than 6,000 people lined the street of Kirkham to welcome the victorious players home at a civic reception in the town.

Despite controversy caused by the switch, people still think the residents of rural Fylde will continue to identify with the side.

Helen Gowers, 59, from Preston Street, said: "In the beginning I thought it might be a problem but I've had second thoughts now.

"If this is what is required to get ahead then fine. As long as young teams in the community keep playing as Kirkham."

Ken Burke, 68, who owns a holiday caravan on Mowbreck Lane, said: "I think they will keep all the fans they had before but I'm not sure if they will attract extra fans.

"If you have success as a football team you wouldn't have thought they would want to change."

Paul Swarbrick, 51, from Lytham, said: "If you support the team, you support the team.

"The only way you will know is at the end of the season. It is a bit of a cliche but in my view if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Louise Fletcher, who owns Kirkham Sports on Poulton Street, says club merchandise has begun flying off the shelves ahead of today's kick-off.

She said: "The town is still very much behind the team.

"They are still the same winning team. I don't believe the change will cost them any fans.

"I hope they will pick up a few more."

Dai Davis, chairman of AFC Fylde, believes the name change will increase the club's potential fanbase.

He said: "People understand the reason behind the name change.

"The proof of the pudding will be in how many people will watch us.

"It gives us a bigger catchment area to develop."
