TEN families had to be evacuated from their homes following a huge blaze.

The fire broke out in a commercial garage at just before 3.30am today on Clevedon Road in North Shore.

Six fire engines were called to the inferno as families from nearby homes on Egerton Road were evacuated.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "We received a call reporting that a commercial garage on Clevedon Road was alight.

"Originally two fire pumps attended the scene but by 4am four more were called.

"Ten homes on Egerton Road then had to be evacuated because the embers were blowing onto their houses.

"Police and fire crews are still at the scene."
