HUNDREDS of delighted Kirkham residents took to the streets today to celebrate saving the town's swimming pool.
Children, parents and grandparents marched down the town's high street to the much-loved Station Road baths.

The parade was arranged following a decision by Fylde Council to hand the running of the facility over to the YMCA.

Bosses at the charity will now run the pool and attempt to bring in a number of improvements including proposals for a steam room, sauna and gym.

The plan is based on a proposal by residents campaign group Rural Splash which wanted the pool to be taken out of the hands of the council.

The local authority had been considering closing the baths due to financial pressures.

Matthew McGregor, eight, from KIrkham, said: "I really enjoyed the march. I thought it was really good and I like what they are doing to save the pool."

Rural Splash and the YMCA now need to raise around £70,000 through either fundraising or additional cash from swimming fees.

But in St Annes you will have to swim in the new shiny town hall instead which is "awash" with money whereas for the pool it's been allowed to "drain away"

Am I missing the point or are Rural Splash? Engineering this takeover along with the FBC and YMCA is great. Well done Rural Splash. However, not one of them encouraged people to or went for a swim themselves after the march. How do I know this?
I arrived at the pool at 1030 (as I do every Saturday) to be greeted with something that looked like a picket line. My daughter and I went swimming,as we do every Saturday. How many of the campaigners joined us in paying the entrance fee and using the facility? None!!!

Pools close due to lack of use.

Yes Benignintervention unfortunately you had missed the point. Without the Rural Splash board hard work and active support of campaigners you would not have been going for a swim in kirkham pool next Saturday..it would definately have been closed at the end of this month. If you had been present in the Market Square at 10 am you would have heard Rural Splash stating that without increased paid attendance and charitable fund raising support the pool will close in 2 years. Those "Picket" boards we were holding throughout the march and when you arrived also displayed "Use it or Lose It" type messages but WE were also celebrating a long campaign success. I am a regular early morning annual swim contract holder like others in the "Picket" line. I visited the pool prior to starting the march at 9 a.m. Raymond Green (Rural Splash virtual Chair) raised £1K for Sural Splash by a sponsored Mile swim in the Pool on Friday. PLEASE PLEASE continue to go swimming at Kirkham Pool and also help to keep it open through positive support to all Rural Splash charitable activity.
