"LEAVE town or we'll stab you".
This was the chilling threat which finally forced terrified Fleetwood dad David Calvert to flee the port.

The 27-year-old is today in hiding after leaving town amid accusations he was child killer Jon Venables.

His new life was wrecked again this week as the old and totally untrue rumours returned – this time as part of a sick internet campaign.

Text messages stating Mr Calvert was the killer have been sent to mobile phones across the UK while more than 2,500 people joined a group on social networking site Facebook calling for the innocent man to be killed.

The father-of-four says all his problems date back to his time in Fleetwood, when the allegations he was one of James Bulger's killers began.

Mr Calvert, originally from Liverpool, said: "It was an horrific experience in Fleetwood.

"I moved there in 2003 and after living there for more than two years, rumours were started by my neighbours.

"I suddenly started receiving hate mail and death threats, and I was worried sick for my children.

"The final straw came when I was in a pub on Tram Sunday, and someone said if I didn't leave, I would be taken outside the pub and be stabbed.

"I left at midnight, in a van, and never went back."

Some people are SO dense!
Jon Venables is in prison. David Calvert is not.
Therefore Jon Venables is NOT David Calvert.

Unfortunately, not just Fleetwood... hysteria is a memetic viral contagion that all too many are happy to catch. Demonising somebody else is an easy way of feeling better about yourself.

By the same token, I bet Calvert regrets he ever committed a crime - now there's a deterrent if ever there was one.

This was whipped up on facebook by people from Wigan, Widnes, Wrexham. The police should go and check the records on facebook and pay those that whipped the frenzy up, despite being shown the original article from 2005 saying he wasn't.

If i was david Calvert, i'd get some shark lawyer to take my case on and sue those that started the group and led the witch hunt. Loads tried to set them straight but common sense had gone out of the window, the pitchforks were out.

And now some idiot, has made the whole town look like brainless morons. But what do you expect when you get all the waifs and strays from outside the town, dumped on your doorstep, by housing associations swapping their asbo tennants about, for a price.

I am so glad, tastymorsel, that i am not the only person with enough brains to work out that a man in prison cannot be the same man walking free, David this is such a saddening story and I can barely imagine the horror and fear you and your family must be feeling. I hope you all manage to pull through this and receive the support you deserve. It would be a start if the people that started the vicious rumours and the sheep that followed on would stand up and apologise. However I wouldn't hold my breath they are good at hiding behind a pc screen and mobile phone but they are nothing but cowards. They should be forced to stand up and be counted. It is like the old days where witch hunts were commonplace. What happened to decorum and simple logic? Good Luck David and family.

I cant quite get my head round this ,we all know that venabels is back behind bars because he has commited a serious offence.

So the fleetwood residents who decided that David was venables stand charged with gross stupidity and really need a taste of there own medicine,

Beware all Fleetwood residents in there late twenties with a liverpool accent.

Good look David i would get as far away as you can from Hampton Vasey

I am quite happy to accept that Mr Calvert is innocent and is not connected with Venables.

However the comment that the real Venables is in prison is not provable. We only have the word of a government that continually lies to the people of this country and quite frankly I do not believe that Venables is in prison at this time.

@Abfab: your comment truly sums up the stupidity that perpetuates rumours like this! So, David Calvert is inocent but Venables is still out there and is still a threat, by your reasoning! If he is still out there, then why all the fuss? He is apparently totally imune from the British judicial system or did Jack Straw make up the story that he's been recalled to prison? It's your sort of stupidity that starts to sew the seeds of doubt about people and start the natives rattling thier sabres and dusting off thier pitchforks!!

I received the text about David Calvert twice in the last week and on both occasions, it was received from people who I would judge to be lacking in common sense and bordering on stupidity!! They were soon put in thier places.
