A MAN choked and died while eating a steak sandwich, an inquest heard.
David John Hughes, 61, died on August 17.
An inquest into his death recorded a verdict of accidental death.
Blackpool Coroner's Court heard Mr Hughes, of Stocks Court, Poulton, had a care package at home because of his long-term incapacity, cau
sed by alcohol.
On August 16, at about 5pm, care worker Charlene McLoughlin had visited Mr Hughes to prepare his food.
He wanted a steak sandwich, so she made the meal, before cutting it into four squares.
She told the inquest Mr Hughes was not someone who needed his food cut up or who was likely to choke on food.
But she did say he had been to the pub and been drinking that day.
The inquest heard Mr Hughes had started wheezing and when asked if he was all right had replied he was.
But he got worse and Ms McLoughlin called her supervisor and an ambulance.
The father-of-three turned blue and fell unconscious.
He was pronounced dead the next day at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
Consultant pathologist Dr Dariusz Golka gave the cause of death as asphyxia caused by aspiration of food.
Coroner Anne Hind praised Ms McLoughlin for "doing all she could" to save Mr Hughes.
