BLACKPOOL Council today revealed the name of the contractors responsible for creating North Promenade's controversial silver sock.
Town hall bosses were left red faced after The Gazette unveiled how workmen sprucing up North Promenade had made an astonishing short cut.

On finding a sock tied to the railing, the contractors painted over it instead of removing it.

Julian Kearsley, executive director of business services for Blackpool Council, branded the stunt an embarrassing mistake and vowed the contractor would return to finish the job properly.

Today the company was named as St Annes Decorators Ltd.

The firm, based on Boome Street, South Shore, declined to comment.

The controversial footwear was removed from the railings 150 yards away from the Hilton hotel on Tuesday – but wet weather has so far prevented workmen from painting over the tell-tale ring.

Mr Kearsley added: "We're obviously very disappointed with this act of laziness.

"The council is committed to cleaning up and improving Blackpool and we want to work with contractors who feel the same."

Council bosses said they were unable to give an accurate figure as to how much the job had cost. They said the work was part of "a larger contractual agreement".

The gaffe was discovered by visitors staying at the nearby Rutland Hotel.

I agree. What took place is laziness but for goodness sake let's keep it in perspective. The person responsible needs a slap on the wrist from his or her employer but it does have its funny side. Surely what is more important is, did St Annes Decorators do a good job apart from the sock incident? If they did there is not a lot to complain about provided they put the little snag right.

Knowing the law in this country, the next phase of the story will be the sock owner suing the council for criminal damage to their property!

I think that publicly naming the company is dreadful. For all we know, maybe they tried to remove the sock but couldn't and so were going to return next week to sort it. Unlikely I know, but hey, has anyone ever had an issue with workmen? Of course we have.

It's good the company has been named and shamed, it's only the threat of exposure that will get people in both the public and private sectors to raise their game.

This company employ workers who think it's acceptable to do half a job with our money, so they need to raise their training standards. The negative publicity from this will do just that if they want to retain any other contracts.

Nope, it still tickles me, I think it's pretty funny, and a new way of recycling odd socks.

Name and shame yes ! As not only did the lazy a*$e paint over the sock but then the work wasn't even checked ? So you have a contract to paint a railing in a town where millions walk past it every year and you don't bother to check it ! Bet he checked the cheque was signed and dated for the work though eh ????

Come-on everyone, it was a joke!
Do you realise just how long and how much effort would be needed to paint a sock compared with just removing it and painting the rail?
I personally thought it was funny like many other normal people did, its just a pity there are so many sad boring people around who can't see the funny side of this.

I got a couple of odd socks, might go down there and tie them on. Could be a new tourist attraction. God knows we need a few funny and original things in this town instead of the several hundred shops all selling the same tat along the prom.

Has anyone ever taken the thought the person might have refused to remove the sock fearing there may have been a used needle in it? I have seen used needles wrapped in allsorts of things.
