CONTROVERSIAL plans to store 1.2 million tonnes of gas under the Wyre countryside have been rejected by Lancashire County Council.
County Hall planning officials had called for plans by American gas company Canatxx to be turned down.

And the county's Development Control Committee today agreed, with councillors voting 13 to one against the plans.

Canatxx UK said concerns about safety had been addressed regarding its plans to store the gas beneath the River Wyre at Preesall.

But county planning officers said there had been no adequate risk assessment and recommended refusal.

Their report also said the estuary's character would be spoilt.

This is the third time Canatxx has submitted plans to County Hall, and the third time they have been rejected.

Around 9,000 people lodged objection to the scheme.

Canatxx bosses indicated last week they would appeal the decision through a public inquiry if their latest application was rejected.

Can someone explain to me just how many times appeals may be lodged,is there not a cut off point when no more appeals are allowed. Its just like our justice system when the bad guys can always appeal but the good guys have to accept decisions!!

So next we can expect an appeal by the company , LCC wont be prered to spend money to defend the action and a government department nobody will overturn the decision, it happens all the time, new labour's democracy

I'm pretty sure this isn't the end of it. Canatxx have a right of appeal to the (national) Planning Inspectorate in Bristol.

Unlucky Canatxx, sorry you didn't get it again but you have been told twice before!
I hear offshore storage is popular now(and safe), check it out.
Bye!

I'd like to see it happen too, we need this investment and jobs although I can understand the concerns of local residents; although I'm sure they can't just implement these plans if they are catastrophically dangerous.

Canatxx are going to appeal. When will they get the message?

When it comes to spoiling the Wyre estuary, the CheeseWeasel would like to see it utterly spoilt with a barrage that would: provide a road link and relieve pressure on the A585, generate electrickery, protect us from storm surge flooding, create a valuable recreational resource and last but not least, look nicer. We can't have that because of some grass and a couple of birds. What chance has Cannotatxxxx with thousands of residents against them.
